Grotting based his findings on observations of 12 patient cases where he was able to employ a no-touch technique, shorten incision lengths and decrease the length of time necessary to complete the surgery.
More than 650 U.S. surgeons have adopted the funnel for silicone gel implant procedures.
In November, Keller Medical was granted a device license to distribute the Keller Funnel in Canada adding to its active international markets which include Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The company is awaiting its CE Mark and plans to distribute the Funnel in the EU later this year.
Breast implants have been linked to a rare but aggressive form of blood cancer - anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or ALCL – in a report released by the FDA on Wednesday, January 26.
Both saline and silicone gel-filled implants have been linked to the cancer that appears around the shell of the implant, anytime after it is placed. Both types of implants have silicone casing which FDA researchers suspect maybe the culprit.
ALCL is extremely rare and makes up only about 3 percent of all blood cancers in adults, according to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.
Delinked from implants, ALCL in the breast occurs in three out of every 100 million women per year worldwide.
The FDA has identified a total of 60 ALCL cases worldwide in women with breast implants. The cases occurred between one year and 23 years after the implant was placed.
The total number of women with implants in the world is estimated to be 5 million, so only one in every 100,000 women with implants gets the cancer. Statistically, that is less than the chance of anyone being hit by lightening.
However, the cancer's link to implants is obvious and the FDA has advised doctors to screen women for ALCL if they are facing problems with their implants. If the doctors see late onset, persistent fluid around the implant they should send the fluid for pathology tests.
"If you look overall [at the likelihood of ALCL] for women who get these implants it is very, very rare," says Dr. Jasmine Zain, a lymphoma specialist who directs the bone marrow transplant program at New York University Cancer Institute. [via abc.com]
According to the FDA, women with implants have nothing to worry about unless they are facing problems. There is no reason for women to have their implants removed, or not opt for them in the first place.

An independent science advisory panel has confirmed an earlier assessment by federal researchers that retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A found in two-fifths of U.S. sunscreens, speeds the development of skin tumors and lesions.
The panel, meeting at a National Institutes of Health research center in North Carolina, today concurred with a pivotal draft assessment published last month by the National Toxicology Program, an interagency federal body that uses toxicology and molecular biology to evaluate chemicals for possible human health risks.
The NTP assessment found that when test animals coated with a mix of retinyl palmitate and skin cream are exposed to ultraviolet light, a major component of sunlight, the cream with retinyl palmitate has the perverse effect of stimulating the growth of skin tumors.
The panel's action is likely to have a significant impact on the U.S. sunscreen industry, which adds vitamin A to 41 percent of its sunscreens, ostensibly to combat aging. Among the popular brands that contain vitamin A are Coppertone, Banana Boat, Panama Jack, Hawaiian Tropic, and Neutrogena.
Earlier, FDA data had suggested that vitamin A may be photocarcinogenic but the evidence against it was not conclusive.

Health tips : A study suggests, Splitting pills could lead to patients taking the wrong doses. Researchers from Ghent University in Belgium said there could be "serious medical consequences" for patients.
Tablets which have a slender margin between a dose that is therapeutic and one that is toxic are riskiest. The study was published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing.
Researchers from Ghent University asked five volunteers to split eight different sized tablets using three different techniques.
The participants used three unusual methods to split the pills a specialist splitting device, scissors and a kitchen knife. The pills were different shapes and sizes.
They found that 31% of the tablets that were split were unusual from the expected remaining dose. The study initiate the splitting device was the most accurate. However, it still formed errors in 13% of cases.
The drugs were prescribe for a range of health conditions, including Parkinson's, heart failure, thrombosis and arthritis.
She said that most tablets were not proper for splitting and it would be better for more doses to be available.
She said, "There are situations where patients involve a dose of medication which can only be provided through splitting a tablet. This might be since there is no liquid form available or it is not acceptable to the patient.

"The loss of sensory receptors around the teeth is connected to some of the dying neurons."

I remember reading once that it takes about 1500 calories burned to burn a pound of fat. So if you set yourself in a deficit of 500 calories per day then you’ll lose a pound almost every 3 days. If you want to lose 10 pounds in three weeks, then that’s 15,000 calories you would need to burn. That’s about 700 calories burned per day. Remember, don’t think of this as solid fact, because I’m not totally sure of how correct it is, but I like to use it as a good guideline. If you’re currently not on a diet you’ll probably lose a lot of weight in the first week; this is because your body has been holding onto extra water. Don’t become discouraged if you don’t see a decrease in weight loss after the first week – this is normal.
Eat Natural Foods
If all the food you’re eating comes in a package you most likely shouldn’t be eating it to lose weight. Stick to fresh foods that are high in protein/carbohydrates and low in fat. A gram of fat contains 9 calories while a gram of protein or carbs contains 4 calories. Less calories in your meals = more calories you’ll burn. Good sources of proteins include chicken breast (stay away from chicken wings), turkey breast, eggs and egg whites (whole eggs have great nutritional value, but be careful of the fat content), cottage cheese, and whey protein. I like to lift weights at least 3-4 times per week. Not only is it good for your strength and muscles – it burns a lot of calories! When you lift weights your body requires nutrition to repair itself so there is a lot less chance of it being stored as fat. Not only will you start to lose weight, you’ll start to feel stronger and better.
I also like to perform cardio 4-5 times per week. It’s great for your heart, and burns extra calories. One thing you will want to avoid is choosing cardio over weight training. Weight training should be most important when trying to lose weight.

Sleep is very important. You want to get at least 8 hours of sleep. Your body needs to recover. The more you sleep the more easily you’ll find the weight comes off. I’m not sure if this is true for everyone, but try not to over sleep. I know when I sleep in (12-13 hours of sleep haha) I feel sluggish throughout the day, and drink more coffee than usual.
Find Your Motivation
Figure out why you are trying to lose weight in the first place. Is it because you just want to become healthier to avoid health problems? Are you trying to fit in smaller clothes? Do you want six pack abs? Whatever the reason, figure it out and every time you find yourself falling off track remind yourself why you are doing this in the first place.
I also find that it helps if you write everything down. Think of this as a competition (or you could join an actual competition! They have them on most forums), and write down your beginning measurements with your goals a month down the road. You’ll find that you’ll be able to stay on track much more easily. Write down all the foods that you eat during the day. Remember, it will all be worth it in the end! You’ll then be able to show your friends how to lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks just like you did.

Yup, your mind likes to tell you lies all the time. “That one cookie will not hurt you” – of course one cookie will not hurt your diet, but what happens when that one cookie leads to 2 then to 3, 4, 5, etc. I like to do the opposite of what my mind tells me. If it tells me “You really want pizza tonight. You need to have it” I will know that it’s just my mind telling me a lie, and just eat something healthy to get rid of the hunger and cravings. If you’re having cravings, just eat something healthy so you’re not hungry anymore, and usually the cravings go away.
It’s really a battle with your mind. You have to put yourself in control. If you can do this, than you can stay on your diet.
Plan all cheat meals
If you want to have some cheat meals then plan it. If you like to have cheat meals with friends or family, then tell them when you plan on having them – this way the cheat meals does come random and multiple times throughout the week”. Now, if you have planned cheat meals, but still find yourself falling off track then I have found the solution to be to go strict. Don’t have any. It will be very tough for the first week, but after the craving subside then you’ll start to crave healthy foods, and not want the junk food anymore. I have tested this, and it really does happen.
You really need to have intense focus, fight your negative thoughts, and prepare your meals and workouts ahead of time. If you follow these three important things you will be successful with your diet plan. Remember, you are in control of what you eat.
