With Spring-Cleaning Season adults had to protect family members and pets from accidental poisoning. They also warn about products meant to be mixed at home. But there's often little safety, use or ingredient information offered by the purveyors of some of these schemes. Safe use is built-in to formulated cleaning products.  



In combination with National Poison Prevention they suggest some Cleaning advice:
  • Never assume a cabinet is too high for a child to reach. Cleaning supplies, medicines, cosmetics, chemicals and other products that can cause poisoning should be stored in cabinets with child-safety locks.
  • Properly close child-resistant packages after use. Keep in mind that child-resistant isn't the same as child-proof and is not a substitute for storing products locked away from children.
  • Always read and follow the directions on product labels. Pay special heed to products with labels that include Caution, Warning, Danger or Poison.
  • Don't throw away Original packaging. Household product labels include first-aid information that will be needed in case of accidental exposure or ingestion. For thrifty shoppers who buy products in bulk quantities, it would be wise to purchase a smaller size of the same product and refill the container as needed.
  • Dispose of empty cleaning containers, including detergent jugs. Never use them for storing other materials, especially not food items.
  • Always wash your hands after using cleaning products. Utensils used to measure or dispense medicines should be thoroughly washed with soap and water or placed in the dishwasher.
  • Use one household cleaning product at a time. Mixing products together could produce harmful fumes or other dangerous chemical reactions.

People Choose Friends


What are the criteria we use while choosing friends? Should friends be like us or, vice versa, complement us having the opposite qualities? The recent research has shed light on the nature of the choice of people’s friends.

The U.S. scientists have found out that we tend to choose our friends not only on the basis of common interests, but applying the genetic principle as well. An article in one of the issues of the popular scientific journal PLOS One is devoted to this question.

The experts have drawn such conclusions while studying the DNA of the people who call themselves friends. 5000 volunteers proved to have different variations of the same gene, and the same variations of the DNA sequence. As a rule, such coincidences are typical of relatives.

However, the authors of the study emphasize that this should be only a hypothesis, since they have studied a very small set of genes. Nevertheless, they claim that genetic similarity among friends is beneficial from the point of view of evolution: for example, members of the same circle of friends with similar genes are capable of resisting certain infections “hand in hand”, the journal PLOS One informs.

More Advantage of Beauty


A beautiful woman draws people’s looks; she is more confident in herself and feels better when she realizes people like her. Another advantage of being beautiful has been recently discovered by scientists. So what is that?

While studying the phenomenon of human beauty, Canadian psychologists concluded that beautiful people are considered to be better than they really are. This discovery has been discussed in one of the latest issues of The Psychological Science journal.

In addition, the scientists have determined that, assessing a beautiful person, people usually define the features of their personality much more accurately than in the case of a woman or a man with an ordinary appearance.

The psychologists obtained this conclusion from a simple experiment involving more than seventy volunteers. The participants were divided into several groups, and each of them was asked to chat with another participant of the experiment for two or three minutes. After a brief communication, the volunteers had to assess the appearance of the interlocutor and draw a conclusion about some human qualities of that person – sincerity, intelligence, openness, even temper, etc.

Having studied the results on completion of the experiment, the authors of the research found out that people with good looks would constantly receive more flattering characteristics from their interlocutors.

Furthermore, the volunteers were often more precise while evaluating them. In the pages of The Psychological Science journal, the psychologists attempted to compare this phenomenon with the purchase of a vividly designed book which is bought with greater pleasure, and is read and considered more carefully than the usual edition. This again proves the necessity for us to take care of ourselves regularly to look beautiful.

Overweight Women Go for Fashion Magazines


The results of the research conducted by the experts from Ohio State University show who and why chooses different gloss magazines. Some previously done study had revealed that the women who are dissatisfied with their appearance also feel unhappy about the pictures of models. However, the new research has discovered a category of women who are the biggest audience buying fashion magazines.

The experiment involved 256 women aged from 18 to 26 years, half of whom were overweight or obese. The volunteers had been viewing the pictures and articles in such publications as “Maxim” and “Vogue” for three hours. It turned out that all young ladies who were overweight spent 50% more time reading fashion magazines than the girls with normal or low weight. However, according to the plump women, they did not admire the ideal proportions of famous fashion models and movie stars or singers. They preferred to read. As for the slim ladies, they almost did not pay attention to the text, considering the photos.

Women will look at the pictures of beautiful and perfect bodies only if they feel they can achieve this ideal or already have similar forms, as the leading expert Silvia Knobloch supposes. On the one hand, the models with ideal parameters can be a source of inspiration to improve one’s own body shape, but only in the case of slim girls. And, on the other hand, they can become a kind of marker to detect women who need some correction of weight.

However, according to the statistics given in the paper, only 24% of Italian women are able to decisively terminate their relations with “inappropriate” men. The vast majority of women indicated that they would try either to reshape their partner, or would tolerate his drawbacks for the sake of preserving the relationship.

Cat Allergy Treated


A group of scientists from the University of Nottingham found a way to cope with the development of allergy to cats.

In the process of research, the researchers found that the main agents in the case of allergy to cats are microscopic particles of their skin. Contacting with a human being, these particles cause allergic reactions among some people, and they are accompanied by sneezing, runny nose, heavy breathing, and other symptoms.

“To find more effective means of treatment for this devastating disease, one needs to learn how the interaction between allergens and the immune system leads to an allergic reaction,” Dr. Amir Ghaem-Maghami says.

It turned out that monosaccharide mannose receptors are among the first cells of the human immune system to come into contact with allergens. As the scientists believe, the disease can be treated by acting on them.

Taking it into account, the doctors have studied the activity of mannose receptors in their reaction to the cat allergen called Fel d 1. As a result, the scientists have succeeded in identifyng a cellular component that plays the key role in the allergic response on the part of the immune system.

The experts emphasize that this discovery will not only help to combat allergies in future, but can be used in the treatment of asthma as well.

Get Ready for Two Babies-Twins


Two hearts are better than one, twins mean twice the joy, but does it also mean twice the trouble? Not quite, but still there are some helpful tips to smooth your way through the birth and the subsequent months of child care.

While not exactly by two, there is going to be much more worry and scurry, so first of all don’t neglect rest. In fact, get as much of it as you can, that will make for a healthier pregnancy and help you brace yourself for what is coming. It may be a while before you get proper rest, running yourself and even a nanny off your feet round the clock. So relax and let’s get down to discussing some practical points.

  1. Twins may want to see the light before the due time, so it’s a good idea to start buying baby clothes and diapers well in advance. Besides, you won’t have to bring in a great bundle of clothes at the last minute paying off a thick wad.
  2. Another item you won’t want to purchase too late is a double stroller. See that it is sturdy to last longer when your twins get heavier and bear in mind that a tandem-type stroller may be better to negotiate doorways and narrow passages. Check whether it will hold the car seats.
  3. Don’t buy everything in twos automatically, think what items can suffice by one. It may be a bouncy seat or a swing where your twins can take turns having fun, then staying away and then mounting them again making the pleasure fresher. At first twins may also do fine using one crib.
  4. Breastfeeding will require a breast pump – and a good one, since it’s going to be in constant use. Choose the best double pump you can find; even if you mean to do without one, there will be times when it will stand you in good stead and enable to get help with feeding.
  5. During the first several months you will be surely needing assistance at a short notice. A relative, a teenager next door whom you know well, a nurse for short spells to provide you coverage so you can get a shut-eye – even a short one will take you a long way!
  6. Warn your pediatrician that you may need more of his or her service starting from the birth on through the hospital. When you have multiple babies chances that they arrive prematurely are higher and they’re liable to stay longer in the hospital than singles – some pediatrician care may be in the order.

And one more thing to prepare is yourself. Expecting is all right, but when the happy parents are actually holding their newborn twins, they usually run through all kinds of strong emotions, so be ready for short spells of shock and fear lest you fail to cope. They are quite natural feelings that will come and go, leaving behind only love that has come to stay and take you through the first strenuous days until you get into the stride.

Non Surgical Anti-Aging Treatments


Non surgical skin tightening involves minimal downtime and risk, unlike surgical facelifts, but how effective are such treatments?

Non-surgical techniques strive to treat skin at greater depths than those achievable using topical creams, and focus on stimulating collagen production.

According to the American Academy of Dermatologists (AAD), currently non surgical alternatives do not deliver the results of a surgical lifting procedure such as a facelift, but they can produce mild to modest tightening by sending heat deep into the skin.

The heat causes some immediate tissue tightening and signals the body to start making new collagen. As the new collagen forms, skin may appear firmer and tighter. There is virtually no downtime.

Some of the popular non-surgical skin-tightening treatments in use and under development are listed below.

In-Use Non-surgical Treatments

Ablative Laser

Laser was first introduced to reduce wrinkles and photo damage in the 1980s.

To begin with, Laser resurfacing was achieved using ablative lasers that vaporize the outermost layer of the skin in a precise and controlled way to a microscopic depth.

The skin then heals over a period of time, as new layers of collagen are produced. The resurfaced skin has a much healthier appearance especially in the case of sun damaged or acne scarred skin.

Ablative laser treatment involves some downtime to allow the skin to heal and also carries minor risks

Fractional Laser

Over the years, the ablative technique was refined through the use of fractional lasers to reduce downtime.

Fractional laser treatment, as the name suggests, exposes only a fraction (20%) of the treated area to pinpoints of laser light, leaving healthy skin in between the ablated areas, which facilitates more rapid healing.

Fractional treatment uses lower energy laser that wounds the skin, without vaporizing it, using microscopic pulses of light. The laser treats the layers of skin under the surface without damaging the surface too much

Radiofrequency (RF) Treatment

According to the AAD, a more effective electrical technique for non-surgical skin lifting is in-office radiofrequency (RF) treatments. RF devices deliver electrical energy deeply into the skin, changing electricity into heat.

Dermatologist Patricia K. Farris, MD, FAAD, clinical assistant professor, Tulane University, New Orleans says that studies show it is the tissues' inherent resistance to the electrical current that generates the heat, which causes contraction of thin membranes running through the fat in the deep layers of the skin, resulting in an immediate tissue tightening.

"RF devices have not replaced traditional surgical face lifting, but significant improvement in neck sagging, jowl and cheek contour, and eyelid and brow drooping have been documented," said Dr. Farris.

Fractional Radiofrequency (FRF)

The latest generation of RF devices deliver energy using the fractionated technology adapted from lasers.

"Studies show that fractionated radiofrequency (FRF) may be more effective than traditional radiofrequency at skin lifting because it induces both collagen and elastin formation," says Farris.

Results

All the treatments listed above require multiple session, but patients may see some improvement after the first treatment.

According to AAD, one study reported that some patients saw a 40% to 60% improvement after the initial treatment, with continued improvement noticeable for up to 1 year after a series of treatments.

Most patients, however, will notice gradual improvement over 4 to 6 months. It also is possible that minimal or no improvement results from non-invasive skin tightening.

Non-surgical Anti-Aging Treatments Under Development

Electroporation (EP)

A new technique to improve aging skin using electricity that is currently being evaluated is Electroporation (EP).

Using the technique high voltage, short duration pulses are applied to the skin to create temporary pores in it.

The pores allow skin nutrients to penetrate deep into the skin, something topical creams are unable to do.

"While research is preliminary, electroporation has been shown to effectively enhance skin penetration of molecules and water-based compounds.

It is possible EP will enable us to deliver compounds such as skin nutrients and growth factors to the skin far more effectively in the future and ultimately help reduce the signs of aging," said Dr. Farris.

Bioelectricity

Creams that mimic how our body uses bioelectricity to heal wounds are being developed as anti-aging treatments.

For example, a cream with a metal in it is placed on the skin, followed by another cream containing a different metal. The metals applied to the skin have opposite charges, which act like a battery – similar to electric stimulation techniques to reduce muscle or nerve pain.

"Much of what we know about bioelectricity comes from our study of wounds, which appear to generate a low level of electricity that starts the healing process," says Dr. Farris. "Interestingly, it also has been shown that aging skin has lower levels of bioelectricity, resulting in poor wound healing, and reduced collagen and elastin formation. This is an exciting area of research, and more studies on these electrically based cosmeceuticals will help us further understand their capabilities and the duration of aesthetic improvements that can be expected."

It turns out that different bacteria which actively multiply in the body may be the reason for insanity.

People Unaware of Healthy Nutrition Rules

UK Food Standards Agency has conducted a survey among more than 3 thousand people. The respondents of the survey were met on the street at random. They were asked to answer a few questions about the basic principles of organizing a healthy diet.

Foods Avoid during Pregnancy


Pregnancy is the time when so many things in life will have to change. Semi-soft cheeses of the mozzarella type, pasteurized cheeses, various spreads, cream cheese, cottage cheese and all kinds of hard cheeses are all right.
  3. If you hunger for luncheon meats, hot dogs and the like, heat them up well, make them steam.

Fat Dolls Prevent Excess Weight in Girls


Dutch scientists have come to a curious conclusion: girls’ appetite turns out to depend on what dolls they play with.
As a matter of fact, psychologists have always known that the idea how a woman should look, the idea of her appearance, her figure and weight is formed in her childhood. This process begins at the age of 3 or 4 years and is already complete by the age of 10. Thus, toys (along with the media and the attitude of surrounding people) actively develop the younger girls‘ concern about their own appearance and figure. The authoritative Science journal studies this issue in the news review.

The scientists decided to check how different dolls affect the girls’ appetite. During the experiment which involved 120 girls the psychologists asked them to play with dolls of different body types: those of slim, medium, and “plump” constitution. Then the children were seated at the table and offered to eat.

The authors of the experiment thought that the girls who had been playing with thin dolls would eat worst, but the result was completely different. The group who had got the dolls with medium constitution turned out to eat best. But, according to the Science journal, the dolls with evident “obesity” definitely suppressed the girls’ appetite.

Cesarean Section Birth Pros and Cons


Scientists have obtained evidence that delivering a child by Cesarean section (if there are no serious arguments for it) is undesirable both for the mother, and for the baby. So, what are the pros and cons of Cesarean section?

Unnecessary Cesarean Section: Study

The microflora of the babies born this way differs from the microflora of those who were born naturally. And that is the reason for the “Caesarian” babies being more susceptible to diseases, experts say. The study of the specialists from the University of Puerto Rico was attended by their colleagues from the University of Colorado at Boulder and two Venezuela institutes.

Nine pregnant women and ten newborn babies (one of the women gave birth to twins) were kept under observation. Four women gave birth naturally, but five of them – by Caesarean section. Samples of the bacterial flora of the skin, the mucous membranes of the mouth, and the vagina were taken from all the mothers after delivering babies. And samples of microorganisms from skin, mouth, intestine and nose were taken from all the babies immediately after birth.

Body bacteria were studied with the help of the molecular-genetic method: by analyzing the structure of variable region genes of bacterial ribosomal subunit (16S rRNA). This site serves as a genetic marker for different groups of bacteria.

The microflora of the investigated women organs consisted of different bacterial colonies. Their composition, naturally, differed; the skin mostly contained Staphylococcus, Corinebacterium and Propionibacterium, the mouth – Streptococcus, and the vagina – Lactobacillus and Prevotella.

Baby’s Microflora

A baby’s microflora differed primarily by uniformity in all parts of the body: that of the skin, that of the mouth, that of the nose, and that of the intestine – they all were the same. But the most interesting thing is that the microflora turned out to depend on the method of baby delivering.

Bacterial colonies of the babies who have come through the mother’s birth canal are dominated by lactobacilli and other vaginal mother’s microbes. And the microflora of the”Caesar-born” in all parts of the body is similar to that of the skin bacteria with the predominance of staphylococci. And in these cases there is no connection with the mother’s organism.

Mother’s Bacteria

The fetus develops in the uterus in sterile conditions, the authors of the study explain. The first portion of the microbes a person gets as soon as he or she is born. And the portion is clearly dependent on the method of birth. If a child passes through the birth canal, then there is a transfer of bacteria from mother to child. If it is removed surgically, it picks up everything on its way.

The scientists stress that vaginal lactobacilli have a protective effect on the newborn, preventing him or her from picking other microbes, such as hazardous staphylococci. “The differences that we have seen may be associated with health risks of the babies born by Caesarean section,” – Dr. Elizabeth Costello said.

C-Section Born Babies Are Less Healthy

It is well known that babies born by Caesarean section are more susceptible to staphylococcal infections (statistics account for about 64% -82% of all cases). These children undergo the colonization of the intestinal useful bacteria later, they are more likely to suffer from allergies and asthma. Their body especially needs the introduction of probiotics, including lactobacilli.

Pregnancy Stress Affects Baby Weight


Stress at work on early stages of pregnancy increases the risk of the infant’s low birth weight.

Dutch researchers have analyzed the answers of 8,266 women to the questions about their working conditions. The results have shown that the working week which lasts 32 hours or more and is characterized by considerable working load in the first trimester of pregnancy has a negative effect on the birth weight. The combination of stress at work with the duration of a working week is connected with the reduced fetal weight and the increased risk of birth of children with malnutrition.

Many women try to reduce their working time and working load closer to the end of pregnancy. However, these studies demonstrate that it is much more beneficial to have partial working load during the first trimester of child-bearing.

It is also worth reminding of the dangers of night shift work. The research shows that because of sleepless nights a female body produces less melatonin, the substance that suppresses the function of sexual glands and helps prevent breast cancer. Back in 2001, the scientists from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre (USA) noted that women who work at night face the 60% higher risk of breast cancer.

Second Hand Smoking Very Harmful to Pregnant Women


The researchers at the University of Nottingham have discovered that non-smoking pregnant women who inhale tobacco smoke have a greater likelihood that their child will be stillborn or will have birth defects.

The scientists advise prospective smoking fathers to think it over and to avoid smoking in the presence of a pregnant woman. Future mothers should also be aware of the potential danger caused by tobacco smoke which affects the body long before conception, and not only during pregnancy.

Dr. Jo Leonardi-Bee says that second hand smoking mothers subject their future children to a variety of risks, including fetal death, low birth weight, premature birth and serious birth defects. Second hand smoking involves the influence on the fetus of the same 4000 tobacco smoke toxins, though in lower concentration.

The researchers claim that the risk of complications is connected with the number of cigarettes smoked. Exposure to smoke from more than 10 cigarettes per day considerably increases the risk of the child’s birth defects. It is therefore very important for future fathers to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked in the presence of a mother to be, or abandon the bad habit completely.

In their article in The Psychological Science journal, German psychologists have given arguments to show why holidays spoil the relations between people, increasing the risk of family conflicts.

The scientists have conducted a survey among several thousands of Europeans to draw a conclusion that 68.4 percent of people are marked with the increased aggression during the period of big holidays.

What Causes Holiday Conflicts?

According to the survey, the notorious “festive” state of conflict is caused by several factors:

  • increased expectations (a lot of participants of the study pointed out that they expected from the holidays if not magic, than at least the resolution of some problems, often connected with their partner);
  • dissatisfaction with the received gifts;
  • fatigue from excessive pre-holiday bustle;
  • a sudden need to spend much more time together than on weekdays.

These reasons are completely different in their essence, but according to the authors of the study, they are the most frequent catalyst for passionate quarrels between dears and nears.

How to Resolve the Conflict

Thus, the psychologists give some helpful tips on how to neutralize a conflict during holidays. For example, they recommend that couples should remember that the holidays themselves require a positive and restful atmosphere. Hence, the best way out is to postpone the squabble. If the row has already occurred, one should not blame the partner, but admit his own part of guilt openly making no haste for reconciliation. Both sides of the conflict will need some time to calm down and reflect on what has happened.

And the main advice on the part of the psychologists is not to discuss the conflict at the festive table trying to defeat the partner in public.

British Women Too Ugly for Burger King Boss


Burger King, fast food chain tycoon, must have had a lousy time during his latest visit to the UK – and then he made no bones telling the world about it.

Discussing his studies at the University of Warwick, King started off a vituperative onset by allegedly stating that the food overseas was “terrible”. This opinion was promptly seconded by his chief executive Bernardo Hees who also spoke disparagingly of the food in the UK in a conversation with students in Chicago.

Then the 40-year-old chain owner was heard to shrug off British women as “not very attractive” and claimed that the UK is not the best country to find a decent entertainment in after the work is done.

Having trodden the UK down in this fashion, King found himself gone overboard and had to offer an apology for his objectionable remarks. For while the Brits do not get on a high horse about their cuisine, there’s no accounting for tastes.

Light Therapy Linked to Improved Cognitive Function Following Brain Injury


Daily application of light therapy via light-emitting diodes (LEDs) placed on the forehead and scalp led to improvements in cognitive function and post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to a new study.

The groundbreaking study has been published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. The article is available free online.

Margaret Naeser, PhD, LAc, VA Boston Healthcare System, Boston University School of Medicine, and colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, in Boston, and MedX Health Inc. (Mississauga, ON, Canada), report on the use of transcranial LED-based light therapy to treat two patients with longstanding traumatic brain injury (TBI).

In the study, each patient applied LEDs nightly and demonstrated substantial improvement in cognitive function, including improved memory, inhibition, and ability to sustain attention and focus. One patient was able to discontinue medical disability and return to full-time work.

These cognitive gains decreased if the patients stopped treatment for a few weeks and returned when treatment was restarted. Both patients are continuing LED treatments in the home. The findings are presented in "Improved Cognitive Function After Transcranial, Light-Emitting Diode Treatments in Chronic, Traumatic Brain Injury: Two Case Reports."

Low-level light therapy using lasers or externally placed LEDs to deliver red and near-infrared (NIR) light energy has been shown in cell-based studies to improve cellular metabolism and to produce beneficial physiological effects. In acute stroke in humans, for example, transcranial NIR light therapy applied less than 24 hours post-stroke was associated with improved outcomes.

Stem Cell Injections Reverse Heart Damage in Preliminary Human Trial


Stem cells injected into enlarged human hearts reduced heart size, scar tissue and improved functioning of injured heart areas in a small first time trial.

The results of the trial have been published in Circulation Research: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Researchers said that while this research is in the early stages, the findings are promising for the more than five million Americans who have enlarged hearts due to damage sustained from heart attacks.

Current options for treatment are limited to lifelong medications and major medical interventions, such as heart transplantation, according to Joshua M. Hare, M.D., the study's senior author and professor of medicine and director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami in Miami, Fla.

Using catheters, researchers injected stem cells derived from the patient's own bone marrow into the hearts of eight men (average age 57) with chronically enlarged, low-functioning hearts.

"The injections first improved function in the damaged area of the heart and then led to a reduction in the size of the heart. This was associated with a reduction in scar size. The effects lasted for a year after the injections, which was the full duration of the study," Hare said.

Specifically, researchers found:

Heart size decreased an average of 15 percent to 20 percent, which is about three times what is possible with current medical therapies.

Scar tissue decreased by an average of 18.3 percent.

And there was dramatic improvement in the function, or contraction, of specific heart areas that were damaged.

"This therapy improved even old cardiac injuries," Hare said. "Some of the patients had damage to their hearts from heart attacks as long as 11 years before treatment."

Hare's study assessed the effect of stem cell injections differently from other studies of post-heart attack stem cell treatment. His team measured contractility, scar size and structural changes of the heart.

"Studies of bone marrow cell therapy for ischemic heart disease in animals have shown improved ejection fraction (the amount of blood the heart can pump). However, this measurement has not reliably translated to early phase studies in humans," Hare said. "Ejection fraction may not be the best way to measure the success of stem cell therapy in the human heart."

Hare also said their findings suggest that patients' quality of life could improve as the result of this therapy because the heart is a more normal size and is better functioning. "But, we have yet to prove this clinical benefit – this is an experimental therapy in phase one studies. These findings support further clinical trials and give us hope that we can help people with enlarged hearts."

“Harmless” Group A streptococcal infection is killing pregnant women. Doctors are concerned that a growing number of women die during pregnancy or shortly after the birth of a baby from a seemingly innocuous infection.

Death rates from Group A streptococcal infection, which is usually accompanied by only a pain in the throat, have risen by almost a 1/3 since 2005. Doctors claim that fatal cases can be prevented if the virus is diagnosed early. It can be treated with antibiotics.

This virus is quite prevalent among children. Most often it occurs in winter and usually leads to mild sore throat or skin infections. However, pregnant women or those who have recently given birth to a child can be quite vulnerable to a severe form of this infection, which can be fatal.

Scientists call for doctors to be more attentive to the initial symptoms of the infection. They also recommend that women be vigilant, as many do not realize that they are in critical condition and therefore do not seek help.

Streptococcal infection can be transmitted through close contact with children. All who have died from the infection have had small children or worked with them. Some of them have lost a mother or their family members recently, had chickenpox or sore throat and respiratory tract infections.

Doctors advise pregnant women to wash their hands more frequently, especially after visiting public places (transport, a department store, etc.).

Tanning Salons for Children


The new statement issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) puts the expert pediatricians’ organization in strong opposition to tanning salons and devices being used by children and teenagers. The reason behind the ban is the threat such devices pose to children’s skin health.

The statement quotes several researchers that discovered a definite link between the UV tanning process and the risk of developing skin cancer. One of the articles deals with the probability of children contracting melanoma, a lethal kind of skin cancer, as a result of their overexposure to sunshine.

Another cause for worrying is that the popularity of tanning facilities among underage children is growing. In the US, doctors report, 24% of white teenagers admit to having tried artificial tanning if only once. A nationwide survey shows that last year 10% of teenagers and pre-teens made use of tanning lamps at home, most of them girls.

The beauty acquired by adolescents via the use of ultraviolet radiation is outweighed by the danger of the exposure, the APP report concludes.

Parents and pediatricians are further urged to inform children under 18 of the threat of skin cancer and encourage them to take prevention measures, one of which is to forgo the habit of putting on artificial tan.

For six years, the participants of the experiment had been “saturated” with trans-fats, and the authors of the study observed their psychological state taking into account their gender, age, weight, and bad habits.

At the end of the experiment, it turned out that 650 volunteers had repeatedly had bouts of clinical depression during the six years. According to the scientists’ data, this group consumed harmful fats in huge quantities. Nowadays, psychiatrists and nutritionists argue that junk food lovers face the risk of having depressive disorders, and it is 42 percent higher than among other people, as the Science journal informs.

It turns out that most of the British women of the 21st century have abandoned their ambitions and career plans and increasingly dream of a warm nest together with their beloved man. In particular, the results of a national survey show that 64% of female residents of the United Kingdom strive to get married successfully. Almost 70% of British women want to “sit” with their children and do not want to work. According to the authors of the survey, a similar test in 1990 showed that the number of women in the UK who wanted to get married as soon as possible was only 20 percent.

In addition, the scientists inquired what the women thought about the IQ level of their potential spouse with whom they would lead a “sedentary” life. 62 percent of the Englishwomen admitted they wanted their husband to be smarter than them, though 20 percent of the survey participants said they were indifferent to their future husband’s intellect.

The Italian Psicologia e Salute journal has published an interesting story written by an American anthropologist, Professor Helen Fisher, in which she asserts that love is nothing, but the joint activity of several hormones, and using this hypothesis, she classifies this wonderful feeling in accordance with “hormonal” types.

In particular, Professor Fisher claims that love is born when you activate the following hormones: dopamine, serotonin, estrogen and testosterone. In this case, dopamine is responsible for the emotional and mental reactions; serotonin brings the feeling of happiness and positive mood; estrogen causes the feeling of tenderness among women; and testosterone is responsible for passion and libido.

Thus, 4 types of love are as follows:

  1. A person with dominant dopamine has passionate, though short love. “Dopamine” type “is burning” only during courtship, but then quickly fades away.
  2. “Serotonin” lovers, on the contrary, are reliable and durable. According to Helen Fisher’s observations, they take pains to build their relationship and are profound in love.

Ultrasound before Abortion


In the State of Texas, USA, women will be obliged to familiarize with the obtained ultrasound image of the fetus before an abortion. Such law was passed by the House of Representatives of the State on March 3.

According to the law, the woman will have to undergo ultrasound examination 1-3 days before the abortion. Afterwards, the doctor will show the pregnant woman the resulting images, comment on them, and let the woman listen to the heartbeat of the fetus, if the time of pregnancy allows it.

The author of such legislative initiative, Sid Miller, noted that the procedure would make the pregnant fully understand all aspects and possible consequences of the abortion. The opponents of the new law are convinced that watching the ultrasound image of the fetus should worsen the emotional state of women who inevitably experience stress connected with the abortion.

Texas authorities who were against the adoption of the law failed to introduce a number of amendments to the document. In particular, there was a suggestion that, in case the woman refused to have the abortion, the tuition fee of the future child would be paid from the state budget.

The new law has already been approved by both the upper and the lower houses of Parliament of the State of Texas and will come into force as soon as the state governor signs the document.

Skin cancer rates rise in older men

Older men need to take skin cancer more critically; new figures reveal an explosion in melanoma rates in Victorian men over 60.

Skin cancer rates have increased by 400 per cent in the past 26 years among males in this age.



Cancer Council's Professor Graham Giles said older men were more at risk of skin cancer because they were born at a time when people were "purposely roasting themselves".

He said, "Men normally have a very poor attitude about their health and women are ones that take them off to see the doctor".

The former construction worker has a six inch mark, but he is lucky to be alive after being diagnosed with melanoma in December.

Doctors removed the lymph nodes under his armpit to prevent the cancer scattering.

Mr Kirby said, he cringes when he sees "young blokes" on building sites topless on hot days.

But Victorian Cancer Registry figures for 2008 found rural men were more than a third more probable to get skin cancer than their city cousins.

The 2217 cases of melanoma recorded across the state in 2008, more than half were men. And, the 279 Victorians who died of the disease in 2008, more than two thirds were men.

Associate Professor Grant McArthur, of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, said skin cancer's load on Australia's population was "enormous". He said, "We have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

The researchers have drawn such conclusions from a series of simple experiments. For example, voluntary participants of the experiment were asked to express their opinion about a certain problem. They were then divided into two equal groups, and the members of one of them were treated with coffee. The representatives of both groups were simultaneously urged to change their points of view. The rats which had received a dose of caffeine were more likely to have a contact with the opposite sex, and what is curious, the most evident effect could be observed among the female rats, as the Science journal informed. Such results of the study can be innocently used by men to get sex from women.

Cope with Stress


In the process of studying the nature of stress, the Israeli scientists have had a number of interesting experiments and made certain conclusions about how to cope with stress.

One can get more details about the study from a news review in the Science journal. In their experiments, the experts have used the fact that the consequences of stress are harmful to people’s psychic and health, and it is very difficult to avoid them.

And it is next to impossible to remove the problems caused by stress experienced in the childhood. The devastating influence of stress on human brain occurs due to corticosteroids which have a destructive effect on different areas of the brain when they are excessively accumulated in the organism.

During the study, the researchers conducted a series of experiments on rats. Experimental animals were divided into three groups: the first group spent three days under hard stress, the second one was placed in the enriched environment after the stress, and the third group was singled out to control the results. After the “stressful” part of the experiment, the rats had to go through a series of tests during which the experts drew the corresponding conclusions. In particular, the animals which had been moved to a diverse and bountiful environment after the stress showed the lowest level of stress. It enabled the authors of the study to conclude that an interesting and eventful life could trigger a considerable reduction of the negative effects of stress on human beings, if not negate it completely.

On a scientific level, this conclusion is presented as follows: the enrichment of the surroundings stimulates the production of proteins that promote the growth of new nerve cells. The Science journal informs that, according to the Israeli scientists, a diverse life can eliminate even the most serious consequences of children’s experience. The conclusion we can draw is to make our life richer and more diverse in order to deal with stress and its consequences more easily.

Obesity Leads to Brain Degradation


American scientists arrived at a distressing conclusion that the brain of overweight individuals starts to deteriorate when they reach the age of 40, as is revealed in a study recently published in the Health magazine.

The research involved volunteers in the age range from 40 to 60 years old. They were divided into three groups according to their weight (normal, overweight, obese) and asked to solve a number of complex problems. The activeness of their brains was gauged by means of magnetic-resonance imaging.

The results of the solutions showed little difference in the participants of all the three groups, but the MR-imaging indicated a decreased functionality of the so-called lower parietal lobe in the members of the obese group. The scientists say that the gray matter of obese people reacts to the set tasks differently than that of people with normal body weight.

Furthermore, the level of brain atrophy is directly linked to the Body Mass Index. The researchers also point out that an overweight individual has atrophy of the cerebral tissue developing in several areas at once – the frontal lobe, the hippocampus, the frontal callosal convolution, etc. In comparison with people with normal weight these brain areas have 8% less volume.

Besides, as emerged from other scientific researches, obesity increases the risk of developing feeble-mindedness with age, the Health reports.

Incline Dumbbell Curl with Three Point Pause :

 

  • Grab a pair of dumbbells and lie face up on a bench set at a 45 degree incline. Twist the weights up.
  • Lower them slowly, but before your elbows bend to 90 degrees, hold for 3 seconds. Hold again at 90 degrees, and again before your elbows make straight. Then stop lowering.

Behind the Neck Dumbbell Triceps Expansion :

 

  • Use both hands to cup the end of a dumbbell, and sit straight on a flat bench. Hold the dumbbell at arm's length on top of your head.
  • Without moving your upper arms, take 3 seconds to lower the dumbbell as far at the back your head as you can. Stop, and then make straight your arms to return to the starting position.

High Pulley Cable Curl : 

 

  • Stand between the masses of a cable crossover station and grab a high pulley grip in each hand. Hold your arms similar to the floor but slightly bend.
  • Lock your upper arms and coil until your knuckles stroke your temples. Hold, and then take 3 seconds to go back.

Close Grip Barbell Bench Press with Pauses : 

 

  • Using an overhand grip that is a bit narrower than shoulder width, hold a barbell on top of your sternum with your arms straight.
  • Lower the bar to your upper body (chest). Seize it for 1 second. Push the bar halfway up. Hold it for 1 second. Lower it once again. Hold for 1 second. Make straight your arms. Hold for 1 second.
