Underarm Sweating Treatment with Laser Surgery

Underarm Sweating Treatment with Laser SurgeryAs the good old sun is turning up the heat mercilessly day by day, the problem of perspiring starts to rear its ugly head with quite a lot of people. So many of us poor blighters will very soon be engaged in the yearly war, buying deodorant sticks, body lotions, ointments, stuffing sweat-absorbing pads in the armpit, reading up on the latest offers in the field. Meanwhile there is going to be a daily onrush of unpleasant feelings as people begin to feel the odor of perspiration emanating from their bodies in a public place or eyeing sadly the ruined armpit parts of their favorite pieces of clothing. Horrible.

Is there a chance to yet win this losing game with one bold stroke? There is, with one laser cut. You can have a doctor aim at your armpit with a laser and kill off all of your sweat glands, leaving the problematic place unable to sweat any more. Just that simple.

Actually, the procedure is new and experimental, meant to be used on people who suffer from hyperhidrosis (that is, compulsory profuse perspiring not caused by physical necessity). Only 20 people underwent this type of laser surgery so far, and it’s early days yet for any results of long-term testing or the knowledge of any possible side effects which may manifest themselves with the passing of time.

Nevertheless it may be well worth the risk (if there is any) and the sum of approximately $3,000 (if you have the money to spare). Watch the video for an attempt to understand what it is like to have it done on you and think how nice it would be to stop worrying about all this sweat breaking out – and who knows just how daring you may be about it?

Cocaine Addiction Vaccine

The U.S. scientists have announced the successful completion of testing a cocaine addiction vaccine.

Ronald Crystal, Head of the Department of Genetic Medicine at Cornell Medical College, has created a vaccine by combining the virus of cold and cocaine.

The researchers conducted experiments on mice which were injected with a new cocaine addiction vaccine. Previously, the specialists had proved that the drug molecule reached the brain pleasure center in a matter of only 6 seconds after penetrating the body. The doctors had to create a vaccine that would neutralize the drug before it entered the center of pleasure.

The scientists were able to develop immunity to the molecules of cocaine by “cheating” the body: the body, as if fighting against the cold, was helped to cope with the molecules of cocaine. The medicine caused the body’s immune response, and the produced antibodies absorbed the molecules treating drugs as a hostile virus. The tests on rodents were successful.

The experts are planning to continue studying the vaccine and conduct clinical tests involving human beings. A single vaccine injection is expected to be enough, the experts say.

No Sex Before Marriage

No Sex Before Marriage
The scientists from the Institute of Medicine in Utah, the USA, have analyzed the common life of more than two thousand of married couples of different ages and made some interesting observations.

The spouses, who had managed to keep virginity until marriage, that is until the first marriage night, assessed their current marital relationship 21% higher than those husbands and wives who had had sex life before making their relationship legal.

Furthermore, those people who had abstained from sex until marriage were 20% more satisfied with the relations between the spouses in their family. Mutual understanding was ten per cent higher in such couples. And many of the “abstaining from sex before marriage” group noted that their sex life in marriage was just amazing.

According to many experts, sexual relations between the husband and the wife are not the only component of the happy marriage relationship. However, it is sex, or rather abstaining from it until marriage, that has had an enormous influence on the subsequent post-nuptial life of the spouses. As the authors of the study claim, such positive effect is caused by the fact that by the time of the first intimate relationship the spouses already know each other in a very good way, and understand their partner’s desire at the level of intuition.

Hair Care Products Banned in Canada

Health Canada has had the monitoring of products for hair which appear in the country’s market and announced a strict verdict – to ban five products because of their being not safe for women’s health.

These are hair straightening products. Why do they seem dangerous to physicians? The five prohibited products contain high levels of the chemical substance called formaldehyde.

Low levels of formaldehyde are safe for human health, but the quantity excessing the maximum norm can lead to various irritations and skin reactions, respiratory diseases, and even cancer.

The doctors agree that the products containing formaldehyde should be used only in well-aired areas, while hairdressers should be especially careful with them.

The safe level of formaldehyde is 0,2%. Whereas the top five banned products demonstrate a significant excess of the norm:

  1. Moroccan Hair Treatment by Inoar (2,84%)
  2. Keratin Complex Express Blowout by Copomon (1,70%)
  3. Keratin Connection by Royal Keratin Professional Line (1,54%)
  4. Zero by La Brasiliana (0,76%)
  5. Veloce by La Brasiliana (0,35%)

Home Chores Leads to Hypertension

The researchers from the Clinical Center in the U.S. city of Pittsburgh have discovered that the development of heart attacks and strokes can be influenced by another, hitherto unknown, factor.

The authors of the study invited 113 members of both sexes. All the people who participated in the study worked full time. Each volunteer had to describe what he did at work to the authors of the experiment in a detailed way. In addition, the participants had to provide information about household chores and tasks.

Following the oral interview the participants had to regularly measure blood pressure for 21 days. After that, the volunteers spent their days wearing special devices on the wrist to know blood pressure over time.

Concerning domestic duties, the researchers noted that it had been problematic not actually to perform the necessary actions, but to have the responsibility for their everyday fulfilling.

According to the study, the most “harmful” home occupations were: cleaning, cooking and, oddly enough, the purchase of food. It was these duties which increased blood pressure most of all.

But a seemingly troublesome occupation, such as taking care and upbringing children, did not lead to an evident increase in the indices of blood pressure.

Care and maintenance of domestic pets contributed to the increase in pressure only with men, leaving the female sex aside.

Mother’s Diet and Obesity in Children

The children, whose mothers were eating improperly during pregnancy, are more inclined to corpulence. Such conclusion has been made by an international group of scientists led by Keith Godfrey of the University of Southampton (UK).As demonstrated by their study, in such cases the body of the child experiences epigenetic changes: the activity of genes that regulate fat metabolism is suppressed. And it does not matter whether the expectant mother has excess weight. The child of a slender mother, who was eating incorrectly, runs a stronger risk of being ill with obesity than the child of a woman with overweight, who was having a balanced and substantial diet during pregnancy.

Tertiary Smoking Leads to Childhood Asthma

As a result of a ten-year study, the scientists from the Institute of Biomedical Research in Los Angeles have found that tertiary smoking is even more dangerous to an unborn child than passive smoking after birth since it leads to prenatal disturbances in the development of lungs.

According to Dr. Rekha, the leader of the research, these violations may lead to the development of asthma and other respiratory system diseases that can accompany a person for the rest of his life.

Tertiary smoking is a relatively new term, and it includes traces of smoke which for years remain on the walls and any other surfaces in your house or your car, even if the smokers no longer live in the house and do not use the car.

Most Premature Baby Released from Hospital

Five-month-old girl Frieda who is the earliest born surviving baby in the world is going to leave hospital for the first time in her life and stay with her parents over the holidays. Frieda arrived into the world on November 7, 2010, after only 152-day pregnancy period, weighing 450 grams and measuring a little more than 27 centimeters. Her parents are Yvonne and John Mangold, 33 and 38.

The girl was born at Fulda Children’s Hospital in Germany where she has been receiving intensive care ever since. Reinald Repp, chief doctor at the hospital, explained that the prematurely born baby received breathing assistance and was fed through the navel; her environment was strictly sterile. Dr. Repp said her health condition was good and added that he was sure “there is no foreseeable risk of aftereffects for the moment.”

Now, after five months of hospitalization, Frieda weighs over 3 kilograms and is over 50 centimeters high, and can be allowed to leave hospital for Easter and stay with her parents.

Unfortunately what doctors called a “medical miracle” didn’t work for Frieda’s twin brother Kilian – he died of heart and intestinal problems back in December. The girl survived, and it is believed that she will grow up to enjoy a healthy life.

In the interview to the Fulder newspaper, the Mangolds said they were delighted, but “the happiness feels strange” because of Kilian – they can’t stop thinking about Frieda’s deceased brother who remains in their hearts.

Frieda is Europe’s surviving record breaker among prematurely born babies while the absolute world record rests with a Canadian boy, James Elgin Gill, who was born 128 days before his due time in 1987 in Ottawa.

Do Women Shop with Mothers

When shopping for a new outfit and in need of advice and sincere opinions, women take their mothers along, affirms a study of 2,000 women commissioned by Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex.

The survey revealed that a great number of women are mistrustful of their friends when it comes to shopping for clothes and accessories – the situation sparks off jealousy and dark undercurrents and is fraught with unreliable compliments. While suspecting their friends of telling lies about how they look 5% of women owned up to handing out false compliments telling their friends the outfit becomes them when they actually thought otherwise because they wished to take them down a notch or two in looks.

On the other hand mothers are downright honest about what they like and what they dislike, making them a more desirable shopping companion for a third of women.

Another advantage is that friends tend to chat and distract attention from the process, while mothers are more intent on getting the things they came out for and thus make shopping a more concentrated and resultative affair.

Lakeside Shopping Centre’s spokesperson, commenting on the findings, underlined the necessity for an honest second opinion when making important purchases and said that dishing out false compliments “seems a bit mean.” That’s what makes mothers who “would never want their daughters to look less than perfect” perfect shopping companions!

Portion Control Plate Prevents Overeating

It’s a perfectly understandable habit with a lot of people to finish off everything that was on their plate, and while it’s fine for clearing up and washing up after dinner at home it may play havoc with the noble wish of slimming down. Of course if you watch your pounds you have to watch your portions, and so many people picked up the restaurant notion that a plate ought to be filled to overflowing. The idea to get it controlled is to whip out this thing called the Portion Control Plate and let it keep your portions and your weight within limits. It’s a dividing device designed to be mounted on your plate (it’s made to fit most common-size plates) and furnish you with compartments for protein, starch, vegetables, fruits, properly labeled. Every compartment is one cup large and has a line marking half a cup. The Portion Control Plate takes its basic notion from the USDA My Pyramid serving sizes. Is $15 all right for the assistance in measuring out proper portions, eh?

Meditation Help Brain Block Out diversion

Mindfulness meditation can help relieve pain and improve memory by regulating a brain wave known as the alpha rhythm, which turns down the volume on distractions. Using meditation was better able to modulate the waves when they were told where to direct their attention after they finished an eight-week course. It has been reported to enhance numerous mental abilities, including rapid memory recall, our discovery that mindfulness mediators more quickly adjusted the brain wave that screens out distraction could explain their superior ability to rapidly remember and incorporate new facts.

The alpha rhythm plays a role in the cells that process senses like touch, sight and sound in the brain's cortex. It helps the brain ignore distractions, helping a person to focus while many things are going on, the findings may explain reports that mindfulness meditation decreases pain perception, Enhanced ability to turn the alpha rhythm up or down could give practitioners greater ability to regulate pain sensation.

Given what we know about how alpha waves arise from electrical currents in sensory cortical cells, these data suggest that mindfulness meditation practitioners can use the mind to enhance regulation of currents in targeted cortical cells. The implications extend far beyond meditation and give us clues about possible ways to help people better regulate a brain rhythm that is deregulated in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other conditions.

Drug Effectively Halts Progression of Multiple Sclerosis

A new compound effectively suppresses the severity of multiple sclerosis (MS) in animal models, according to a new study.

The new class of compounds was developed by scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute. There study appeared in an advance online edition of the journal Nature on April 17, 2011.

The compound could provide new and potentially more effective therapeutic approaches to multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases that affect patients worldwide.

Multiple sclerosis is a disabling neurological condition which usually starts in young adulthood. It results from the body's own immune system damaging the central nervous system. This interferes with the transmission of messages between the brain and other parts of the body and leads to problems with vision, muscle control, hearing and memory.

Current MS treatments suppress the patient's entire immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to a range of adverse side effects. Because the new compound, known as SR1001, only blocks the actions of a specific cell type playing a significant role in autoimmunity, it appears to avoid many of the widespread side effects of current therapies.

"This is a novel drug that works effectively in animal models with few side effects," said Tom Burris, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Molecular Therapeutics at Scripps Florida who led the study, which was a multidisciplinary collaboration with scientists including Patrick Griffin, William Roush, and Ted Kamenecka of Scripps Research, and Paul Drew of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. "We have been involved in several discussions with both pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms who are very interested in developing it further."

A lengthy process of drug development and review is required to ensure a new drug's safety and efficacy before it can be brought to market.a

Chemicals Make Women Face Early Menopause

Objects that are lying about your house freely, objects that you handle every day have been found to contain chemicals that are linked with early menopause. Furniture, pieces of clothing, toys in the nursery or non-stick pans in the kitchen all have chemical compounds that eventually find their way into your body via air, water and plants.

Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) are used in so many household items that they end up in drinks and food and even in the air inside the home, studies discovered. As the PFC-level in human bodies rises, it begins to relate to health issues such as immune system dysfunctions, thyroid cancer and heart diseases.

Chemical manufacturers claim that PFCs-containing products are completely safe, but a new study says there are reasons to refute the statement and start looking for natural substances to use instead of perfluorocarbons.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, concludes that high exposure to PFCs that leads to its accumulation in the body is linked with a lower estrogen level. In 26,000 women involved it was discovered to associate with early menopause. In women of 40 and over the level of female sex hormone estradiol goes down which draws the onset of menopause nearer.

Eating Before Sleep How to Remedy the Consequences

Everyone knows that eating before sleep is very, very bad. Many of you know why it is bad. Only a few, however, manage to avoid it. And almost no one knows that the consequences of such transgression can be amended quickly – they can literally be removed in less than 24 hours.

Overeating Before Going to Bed

You may call it lack of organization or whatever, but the fact remains: frequently after the morning coffee with curds or a sandwich, and then after the daily chocolate bar or even the sandwich, the first and the last substantial and relatively complete meal is dinner. Moreover, at a time when it is already somewhat indecent to eat! Even if on the way home you give yourself a vow not to approach the refrigerator, the appetite is unbelievable, and you can hardly be selective. The result is in overeating. We first feel the consequences as an uncomfortably full stomach, then we shall see them on the scales, and afterwards we shall torture our psyche with self-abasement. What can you do with it? As of any situation that seems hopeless, there are three ways out.

Don’t Eat until the Next Lunch

Some doctors advise not to eat during the next 14-15 hours, i.e. before the normal lunch time the next day. These hours are enough to “dissolve” the consequences of the received excessive food. At the same time, breakfast which is rightly considered the main meal of the day by so many people cannot be skipped by any means. But this meal should really be very easy and “classic”: 100 grams of cottage cheese or a plate of oatmeal, etc.

Detox Day

Make the next day a detox day which means, for instance, eating either 800 g of low fat cottage cheese throughout the day or 1.5 kg of apples, or 2 kg of vegetables without salt, or 2 liters of yogurt. Those, who are especially interested in trying, can even spend a banana day and eat over 1 kg of them. However, it is important to restrain from extremism and not to starve since complete hunger can reprogram the body to accumulate fat in a matter of a day, and then the weight will start to be gained even after eating relatively harmless products.

Physical Exersices: Walking

One of the secrets of health, well-known around the world, is effective but not exercised – 10000 steps a day (5 km). If the walking norm is doubled the day after eating before bed, which is not as scary as it may seem at first glance, the consequences will disappear completely. Instead, they will manifest themselves in muscular joy and responsible attitude to oneself.

Eating Which Foods Before Sleep Is Harmful?

Another important thing to remember is that late dinner is not the one after 6 p.m., but the one that is less than two hours before bedtime. The best sleep usually begins before midnight.

Things Preventing Happiness

What are the mistakes that impede our happiness and that we make in everyday life? You simply need to change the way of thinking, and then you will become happy.sicologia e Salute, a popular Italian magazine about psychology and health, has recently reprinted the article by the American psychologist Arthur Freeman, who specializes in cognitive psychology, devoted to the most common errors of people’s thinking that prevent them from being happy.

These failures, according to Freeman, lead to an incorrect interpretation of life experience, incorrect conclusions, exacerbate already existing problems, but at the same time, they actively create new ones.

The top-list of small and large human mental errors looks as follows, according to the author:

  1. Disastrous conclusions: when a person blows out petty troubles into a global problem, plunging himself into a state of despair and emotional paralysis.
  2. Mind reading: when a person not only believes that he clearly understands all the motives of another person, but also requires understanding of the motions of his own soul, refusing to explain what is required of that other person – let him guess! Such an approach, Freeman says, leads to deep disappointment and mutual resentment.
  3. False responsibility: when a person is inclined to accept everything that happens as if he were guilty. Assuming that he is responsible for someone else’s bad mood or even more global things when people doom themselves to stress.
  4. Self-confidence caused by flatteries: when a person receiving other people’s recognition in some area, begins to assume that this automatically guarantees him success in other areas of life.
  5. Excessive relying on criticism: when a person undoubtedly believes in all negative judgements about him, no matter where they occur.
  6. Inflated standards: when a person is so maximalistic that he himself can not grow up to a definite height.
  7. Painful comparison: when a person constantly compares himself to the people, who are better than him in the process of comparative analysis, it inevitably leads to a drop in self-esteem.
  8. Anxiety: when a person is concerned about non-existing problems, and gives every effort to get rid of anxiety, rather than to solve real problems.

Brits Spend 2 Years of Life Worrying

At the request of some energy corporation British experts have conducted an unusual research. The survey of the researchers was aimed at asking several thousand people to determine what makes them worry and be excited. In addition, the scientists inquired how often the people used to worry and suffer in their life, and for how long their anxiety lasted.

It turns out that the average Briton spends more than an hour each day in his worries and anxiety. By means of simple calculations one concludes that during approximately six decades of life the average Englishman spends about two years in unrest. The causes of anxiety and agitation are quite common – these are matters of money and health, career and relationships. These are the reasons to worry for the absolute majority of the world’s population.

The authors of the study have conducted a survey among three thousand residents of the United Kingdom. Every day the British citizens are worried about seven reasons, with each reason taking from eight to ten minutes of their time. By adding, one gets two hours of daily worrying.

However, the difference in the reasons was very significant – someone was more worried about his health, someone could not bear to think about his favorite team’s defeat, and some people were worried about not being able to pay the debt back.

Weakened Immunity Prevents Conception

The team of scientists from Weill Cornell Medical College have found that disorders of the immune system may be the cause of problems with conception.

A series of experiments conducted on several species of mammals has shown that immunotherapy can help control fertility. As pointed out by the researchers, the data obtained in the course of the study can be applied to human beings because the mechanisms of their immune system and the process of formulating necessary pregnancy hormones are almost identical to the mammals tested.

So, as a result of certain diseases, the body may produce appropriate antibodies, which reduce the production of progesterone in women and testosterone in men. According to the leader of the research, Professor of biology Bridge Saxena, in the nearest future the scientists are planning to use the data they have obtained to begin the development of a special drug that helps to control the process of reproduction of cats, dogs or other pets.

After proving the efficiency, safety, and reversibility of such interference, the techniques of immunotherapy based on the use of specific recombinant proteins will be used in the treatment of disorders of the reproductive system in humans, as the dostor says. For example, it can be helpful in the case of excessive androgens in women which is a frequent cause of their inability to get pregnant.

Babies Should Start with Complementary Foods Earlier

World Health Organization has issued recommendations on the time when the child should be best transferred from breastfeeding to complementary foods. But the British researchers have reached the conclusion that the late introduction of complementary foods may harm the child’s health. This kind of discovery can lead to a real revolution in the fields of neonatology and pediatrics.

According to the authors of the study, introducing complementary foods should take place before reaching the age of six months. And feeding with breast milk, in its turn, threatens with certain risks to the health of the developing organism.

  • First of all, breastfeeding causes a high risk of iron deficiency anemia. Moreover, anemia can take a lot of time to discover.
  • Apart from that, the researchers note that the child has a greater tendency to be allergic to foods after consuming only mom’s milk for a long time.
  • In addition, the children who are breastfed for a long time may suffer from further problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

However, whenever the authors of the study suggest complementary foods, they do not mean artificial mixtures based on milk, but real “adult” food.

The authors also note that they are by no means opposed to breastfeeding of babies, they merely shift the starting date of using complementary foods from six months to four months.

Children Change the Family’s Diet

As part of the British national movement against overweight and obesity, a team from the University of Reading conducted a study of how and in what quantity various categories of the population consume fresh fruits and vegetables, which are a necessary component of a balanced diet.

It became an unexpected discovery for the investigation organizers that childless families eat far more fruit and vegetables compared to those people who have experienced the joy of parenthood. However, it had been assumed to happen vice a versa, since the presence of children in a family seems to automatically imply balanced and nutritious meals.

At the same time the difference in this criteria was highly significant. According to the specialists’ calculations, husbands and wives, having no children, had eaten almost four kilograms more fruits and vegetables for thirty days than moms and dads in the same age category.

In other words, children’s presence in a family significantly reduces the amount of fruits and vegetables eaten by parents. The scientists believe that the main factor behind such a strange pattern is a “negative” impact on parents by their children who often refuse to eat broccoli or carrots. And the more children there are in the family, the less fruits and vegetables are consumed by their parents.

Yoga for Children

Healthy lifestyle is the trend of our time. One has already begun to promote this practice among England’s youngest citizens. Thus, one of London’s kindergartens began to conduct experimental yoga classes for kids.

The experts believe that the lessons will help children to improve their future school performance and to support mental health: the exercise improves concentration and even the four-year-old children’s performance. It is assumed that soon a one-hour yoga lesson will be included into the schedule. Kids will learn to control their breath by meditation.

Teachers are confident such studies cannot bring any harm, but rather help children “find their own place.” In addition, yoga has a very calming effect, which is especially important with hyperactive children.

Overeating Starts in Infancy

Pediatricians from the American Association for the prevention and treatment of childhood diseases have analyzed the data on fifteen hundred healthy infants. Until the time the children reached the age of one year, the young mothers had been giving answers to the questionnaire. The questions were about the scheme of feeding babies and grown-up children.

At the age of one month more than fifty percent of the babies were receiving only breast milk for food, and more than forty percent were being fed only with artificial mixtures. Other children were being fed with descented milk of other women. After the children had reached the age of six months, only thirty percent of the mothers continued to feed them with their milk.

After that and during the period of childhood from six months to a year, the researchers asked the mothers about the frequency with which the children finished eating all the food offered to them. It turned out that only 26% of the children who had been breastfed from birth suffered from overeating. On the contrary, overeating was typical of more than 60% of the children who had been fed with mixtures or transferred to artificial feeding at the age of six months.

According to the scientists, the children’s food behavior during the first months of their life lays the foundation of the feeding behavior which will stay invariable for the rest of the person’s life. Accordingly, such an addiction can cause overweight or serve as effective prevention of obesity.

Exercise is solution for People with Arthritis

Exercise is a good way for people with arthritis to control pain and improve physical function. People who have arthritis are often scared to exercise because they think they will hurt themselves, but the condition will only get worse if people don't get moving. The best way to start is to talk to your doctor about exercising and then work with a therapist or personal trainer to establish guidelines.

Exercise offers a number of benefits for people with arthritis, including: increasing muscle strength and endurance to improve joint stability; preserving and restoring joint motion and flexibility; and boosting aerobic conditioning to improve mental health and decrease the risk of other diseases.

Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form. It occurs when cartilage deteriorates, leaving nearby joints with no cushion between bones. Many people also suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, which occurs when inflammation in the joint causes it to lose shape and alignment. The best type of exercise program can depend which form of arthritis a person has, but some workouts benefit all patients. All arthritis sufferers can benefit from stretching to increase range of motion around an affected joint. The type of stretching one should do depends on which joint is affected. Arthritis sufferers may also want to try light weights a few times a week to build muscle strength and low-impact aerobic exercise such as walking.

Start slow, with 10 to 15 minutes of aerobic exercise every other day, to see how it impacts your body, as your body adapts to the new routine, gradually increase duration to 30 to 45 minutes. Other good exercises can include water aerobics, stationary cycling, gardening, swimming, yoga and Tai-Chi.

Lose a Lot of Weight

An English woman weighing 225 kilograms has managed to lose weight only due to her willpower and appetite restrictions. What played a really significant role was her fear to leave her children orphaned and the sadness of the fact that she would not able to attend her friend’s wedding. Now, after five years since the time she started to struggle with weight, Zelda Haxby has restricted her diet. She is preparing for the swimming pool now.

Having married and given birth to two sons, Zelda Haxby became a homemaker. She spent the days in the kitchen preparing dishes for her family and would indulge herself eating some “yum-yum” food. Soon she began “to have a bite” even at night. Having awakened, she would switch on the lamp. In the cozy atmosphere of her kitchen light on, she would eat at night just as during the day. At daytime she could eat up to 15 packets of potato chips.

Once she fell ill with heart and was taken to the hospital. The woman realized that she could die at any moment and would no longer be able to see her children. Only one faithful friend from her childhood kept visiting her. Zelda herself could not leave the house because of her obesity. Zelda learned that her friend was going to get married, and just was in despair. In the late winter of 2007, Zelda learned that her friend would have her wedding in September. And what if she would not be able to squeeze between the rows of church pews?

There appeared a strong desire to lose weight. Zelda began to eat less and as a result of the first year she lost 76 kilos. It was easier for her to go on, but her extra weight became more difficult to get rid of. The Englishwoman weighs 98 kg now, but continues to restrict her diet.

Zelda’s case can inspire many women trying to lose weight, drop the diet, and start their weight-losing measures again because sometimes we lack a meaningful incentive to make a breakthrough and not to give up the diet again. Love for children and friendship are the best motives to lose weight, aren’t they? Staying healthy for a long time, we can give and receive pleasure from communicating with our dears and nears much longer.

Workaholics Live Longer

This paradoxical regularity was discovered by the scientists from the University of California, Riverside. The team of psychologists under the guidance of Professor Friedman had been investigating for twenty years how personality type influences life expectancy.

One and a half thousand gifted children, aged about 10 years, became the participants of the research in 1921. A few generations of scientists had been studying their life for seventy years. The next twenty years were required to fully analyze the obtained data. And some results turned out to be quite unexpected.

Here are three of them. The slogan “Do not worry, relax, do not overwork” is pointless. Despite the popular belief, concentration on work, even if accompanied by a great part of stress, considerably increases the chances to have a long and meaningful life, as compared with those who are trying not to work too hard.

The scientists were surprised to obtain another consistent regularity: the children, whose parents hurried to send them to school in advance of time, live less than their peers who had enough time for games.

It can also be considered a scientifically proved fact that the desire to help others is a truly healthy habit. It is even more effective in prolonging life and improving its quality than being surrounded with love and sharing love with one’s dears and nears, not even to mention the usual advice about improving one’s eating habits. “Relying on the today’s popular ideas about the importance of correct combining of Omega 3 and Omega 6 in the matter of longevity, we miss something far more essential. Healthy lifestyle is definitely important, but there are more fundamental things,” Professor Friedman says.

Tips to Control Weight and Nutrition during Pregnancy

There is an opinion that an expectant mother should eat for two. Perhaps this is the most common misconception among pregnant women. Pregnant women’s nutrition should be balanced, and it does not mean that a woman in the family way has to eat as much as possible.

Pregnant Women Should Eat Less and More Often

It is important to follow the regime: to eat little but often. It is recommended to reduce one’s usual size of meals and make them two or even three times smaller during pregnancy, but at the same time a pregnant woman should eat not less than 6 times a day. It is important to take care of the figure even during pregnancy. Firstly, it can make the process of childbearing and childbirth easier. Secondly, sharp increase in weight leads to an intensive appearance of stretch marks, not only in the abdominal area, but the breast and thighs as well.

Think of Postpartum Weight Loss

A lot of pregnant women allow themselves to relax and eat lots of sweet pastry. Try to restrain yourselves and think more often about how hard you will have to work to return to your previous shape after giving birth. Increase the caloric value of your diet gradually – in accordance with the growth of the fetus. Nutritionists recommend to eat virtually without changes during the first trimester of pregnancy – except for eating more healthy food, but the caloric intake at the same time should not differ from the average daily norm for women, 2800 calories.

How Many Calories Do Pregnant Women Need a Day?

During the first trimester the calories are almost unchanged, while the second trimester of pregnancy is characterized by a monthly increase by 70 calories which means that during the sixth month your calorie intake should not exceed 3000. During the last trimester the increase in calories should be in the same proportions, and during the last month of pregnancy you should eat not less than 3,200 calories per day.

Celebrity Moms’ Pregnancy Weight Gain

It is interesting to know that a lot of celebrities do not follow the advice of their own nutritionists and allow themselves to relax during pregnancy and eat a lot of superfluous food having a special fancy for the sweet. How many extra kilos of weight have celebrity moms gained during pregnancy?

  • Britney Spears has gained 18 kg
  • Jennifer Lopez, bearing twins, has gained 25 kg
  • Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise’s wife, has put on 16 kg
  • Milla Jovovich has beaten all records with her 30 kg of gained weight during pregnancy.

Breast Milk Helps Detect Cancer Risk

The U.S. scientists have found that special molecules that a woman’s breast milk contains may help determine how high the risk of cancer for this particular woman is.

According to the experts from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who have conducted this research, the breast milk contains genes which may be associated with the risk of transmitting hereditary breast cancer. Furthermore, this method of analysis is among the simplest and cheapest ones.

The experiment involved 250 women who gave samples of breast milk. The scientists studied its DNA molecules to determine whether there were any changes in the genes. In addition, all the participants of the experiment were biopsied so that the tumor, if any, could be undoubtedly identified. As it eventually turned out, the women whose biopsy results were positive had certain components in their breast milk which would help identify symptoms of cancer.

The specialists point out that this method of diagnosis may be one of the most effective non-invasive methods of determining breast cancer of all currently known. For example, the widespread mammography, which is regularly recommended to all ladies of mature age, is not effective for diagnozing young women who have not reached their menopause, especially if they are breastfeeding the child. As a result, tumor is sometimes difficult to find when using traditional methods.

Aeroport Scanners Not Dangerous to Health

In a run-up to the holiday season many are particularly worried about whether it is safe to use X-ray scanners, with which many airports have been recently equipped with.

The radiologists from the University of California in San Francisco, the USA, say that these devices are not harmful for health. The scientists have made some measurements and concluded that in a few seconds spent in the scanner the person receives the same dose of radiation as in 3-4 minutes of normal life with normal background radiation. Simply, the dose is negligible and absolutely safe even for those who fly regularly.

For the full credibility the scientists give a few more examples of comparative radiation exposure:

  • 50 passes through the scanner = 1 X-ray of the patient’s teeth,
  • 1000 passes through the scanner = 1 chest X-ray
  • 4000 passes through the scanner = 1 mammography
  • 200,000 passes through the scanner = 1 abdomen tomography.

The scientists make only one stipulation: all these figures are correct if the scanner at the airport is working properly and is maintained in a due way.

Almost 20 percent of Lung Cancer Patients Keep Smoking

Many patients diagnosed with lung cancer as well as their family caregivers continue to smoke even though doing so may risk their recovery and long-term health. They looked at 742 cancer patients and caregivers at multiple sites and found that 18 percent of smokers with lung cancer failed to quit after their diagnosis. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.

Among a subset of smokers with colorectal cancer, which is not strongly associated with tobacco use, 12 percent of the patients continued smoking. An even higher proportion of the patients' family caregivers also kept on smoking 25 percent of those caring for lung cancer patients and 20 percent of those caring for colorectal cancer patients. Most of the caregivers were middle-aged females and were often spouses of the patients. In some cases, both the patient and the caregiver continued smoking. If family caregivers see the cancer patient quit, they're more likely to quit themselves. But if either the patient or caregiver continues to smoke, it can trigger issues of guilt, stigma or blame.

Continued smoking has serious repercussions for lung cancer patients. Patients may develop appetite loss, fatigue, and cough or coughing up of blood, pain and poor sleep. Self-esteem suffers too, and anxiety and depression may also develop. The immediate benefits of quitting smoking are easier breathing, increased circulation and improved efficacy of cancer treatments. People find that once they quit, they have an increased joy of life, no matter how much they believed in the myth that they would miss cigarettes.

Women Feel Pain More

It turns out that women feel pain more acutely than men. It has been discovered by the researchers from London and Japan under the supervision of Kuazim Aziz, Professor of Wingate Institute for neurogastroenterology.

They were monitoring the brain activity and reaction of 16 men and 16 women who were in the state of expecting pain or were already experiencing it. The volunteers were told that a small ball would be put in their esophagus, and it would gradually increase in size. Before the procedure, the women were not afraid. All their efforts were focused on planning the actions which would help them prevent pain. But the men who were anticipating pain were completely entrapped by terror. The situation, however, changed during the experiment: the men began to think about how to prevent pain, and the women gave way to emotions and started to feel the pain more acutely.

Brain scans have given a chance to find out that women respond to pain more acutely than men. But the reaction of the stronger part of mankind is concentrated in the segments of their brain which are involved in preventing pain, and it enables them to cope with the discomfort easier.

Weight Loss Secret

Chronic lack of sleep and a lot of stress are the most serious factors of overweight. People who have little sleep and live in constant tension, are not likely to lose weight even on the most effective diet and fitness program. The specialists at Yale University (USA) were watching 472 overweight people for 26 weeks. Everybody under test sat on a low calorie diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains, and did fitness at least 3 hours per week. On average, the volunteers lost 7 pounds, but those who got not enough sleep and were often nervous, mostly lost only 3.5 pounds and less. The most successful in slimming were those who slept 6-8 hours and had a low stress level.

Non-Hormonal Birth Control Pills

The scientists from the University of California (San Francisco) made a discovery that in the nearest future will allow non-hormonal women contraceptives to be created. They found a biologically active substance, which attracts spermatozoa to the ovule during fertilization. “If its action is blocked, there will be no need to suppress the ovulation process with the help of hormones, because it is how modern birth control pills work,” – the authors of the investigation say. It is no secret that due to this, birth control pills have a number of unpleasant side effects. The authors of the discovery hope to find a non-hormonal way to make the ovule not to attract, but, on the contrary, to alienate spermatozoa.
