Women Use to Manipulate Men

Psychologists from California have discovered five types of smiles that women use to manipulate men.

“A Duchenne smile”

The smile is named after Duchenne de Boulogne, the physiologist who described a form of muscular dystrophy in the 19th century. Both teeth and gums are exposed. The smile tells you: better not approach!

“A coquettish smile”

A short smile, often involving only one corner of the mouth. At the same time, the woman squints at the man, with her head turned in another direction. The smile demonstrates independence and encourages an acquaintance. But it by no means guarantees it.

A “social” group of smiles

Social smiles are accompanied by tilting the head or by lifting the eyebrows, with subsequent demonstration of embarrassment by means of dropping the eyes and slightly lowering the head. It encourages further conversation. A very important category is the “warm” smile which shows care and concern. It is hardly noticeable and is accompanied by a sincere warm look right into the eyes.

Alternative to Plaster

The Scottish surgeon, Gordon MacKay, has invented a more convenient alternative to plaster. According to the doctor from the Ross Hall Hospital, the classic plaster should be replaced with the film which keeps the damaged area motionless.

A small piece of film is inserted through a small incision made in the problem area. The film acts as a brace holding the damaged ligaments. The advantage of this method is the easy application of this holder and the ability to maintain muscle tone and reduce recovery time after the injury.

According to the author of the invention, it is important for athletes who need a quick recovery after the injuries of ligaments. The method has been tested on the Scottish skater and seven times champion of Great Britain, Sinead Kerr. She has successfully healed her injury in such a way and says she feels fine now.

Teenage Obesity and Cancer Linked

A recent study has proven that teenage obesity increases cancer risks in the future.

The researchers headed by Dr. Lindsay Gray held a long-term study, in which 20 thousand men participated voluntarily. It was found out that those men under test who had a high bodymass index at the age of 18, died of cancer in their adult life up to 35% more frequently than their peers who had normal weight. Obese people had a 50% greater lung cancer risk, which didn’t depend on the fact whether they were smokers.

Experts are alarmed about the situation, as the rising rates of obesity in the world today seem threatening.

Dieting Before Conception Bad for the Baby

The health of the future baby is determined by not only what the mother eats during pregnancy, but her diet long before conception as well.

This was proved by the Danish researchers from Aarhus University during the experiments on animals. The researchers had been forcing the mice to a low-protein diet for ten weeks before mating. While the mice were bearing their offsprings, they received their usual diet. The mousekins were born underweight and had an increased sensitivity to insulin which in the future could lead to a highly probable problem with type 2 diabetes. Also, it is proved that sensitivity to insulin often causes obesity in males.

The scientists believe that the results of the experiment may be relevant for people as well, though with some precaution. At least, when examining the influence of nutrition on the health of a future baby, the doctors obtained the same results from studying mice and human beings. That is why the women who are planning a child in the future are recommended not to stick to a strict diet for at least a few months before the alleged conception.

Positive Activity Depression Can Be Effective

Positive Activity Interventions (PAI) serves as an effective, low-cost treatment for people suffering from depression, according to a new study.

PAIs are intentional activities such as performing acts of kindness, practicing optimism, and counting one's blessing gleaned from decades of research into how happy and unhappy people are different.

The study by a team of UC Riverside and Duke psychology, neuroscience and psychopharmacology researchers appears in the August 2011 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

The new approach has the potential to benefit depressed individuals who don't respond to pharmacotherapy or are not able or willing to obtain treatment, is less expensive to administer, is relatively less time-consuming and promises to yield rapid improvement of mood symptoms, holds little to no stigma, and carries no side effects.

The research team reviewed past PAI studies, including randomized, controlled interventions with thousands of normal men and women as well as functional MRI scans in people with depressive symptoms.

"Over the last several decades, social psychology studies of flourishing individuals who are happy, optimistic and grateful have produced a lot of new information about the benefits of positive activity interventions on mood and well-being," says Sonja Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology and director of the Positive Psychology Laboratory at UC Riverside, who was part of the research team.

However, such findings have not yet entered mainstream psychiatric practice.

"Very few psychiatrists collaborate with social scientists and no one in my field ever reads the journals where most happiness studies have been published. It was eye-opening for me as a psychopharmacologist to read this literature," says P. Murali Doraiswamy, M.B.B.S., FRCP, of Duke University, another team member.

Lyubomirsky said that after she and Doraiswamy exchanged notes, "the obvious question that popped up was whether we can tap into the PAI research base to design interventions to galvanize clinically depressed people to move past the point of simply not feeling depressed to the point of flourishing."

Although the paper found that positive activity interventions are effective in teaching individuals ways to increase their positive thinking, positive affect and positive behaviors, only two studies specifically tested these activities in individuals with mild depression.

In one of these studies, lasting improvements were found for six months. Effective PAIs used in the study included writing letters of gratitude, counting one's blessings, practicing optimism, performing acts of kindness, meditating on positive feelings toward others, and using one's signature strengths, all of which can be easily implemented into a daily routine at low cost.

People often underestimate the long-term impact of practicing brief, positive activities, Lyubomirsky said. For example, if a person gets 15 minutes of positive emotions from counting her blessings, she may muster the energy to attend the art class she'd long considered attending, and, while in class, might meet a friend who becomes a companion and confidant for years to come. In this way, even momentary positive feelings can build long-term social, psychological, intellectual, and physical skills and reserves.

While PAIs appear to be a potentially promising therapy for mild forms of depression," Doraiswamy cautioned, "they have not yet been fully studied in people with moderate to severe forms of depression. We need further studies before they can be applied to help such patients."

More than 16 million U.S. adults – about 8 percent of the population – suffer from either major or chronic depression. About 70 percent of reported cases either do not receive the recommended level of treatment or do not get treated at all, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that depression affects more than 100 million people.

Although antidepressants can be lifesaving for some individuals, initial drug therapy produces full benefits in only 30 percent to 40 percent of patients. Even after trying two to four different drugs, one-third of people will remain depressed.

Long Sitting Hours Carry Serious Health Risk

Most of us are aware that a sedentary and inactive lifestyle can lead to health complications, including obesity and heart problems, but what many do not realize is that there is another serious risk associated with spending too much time simply sitting down.

A US study published this month in the British Medical Journal found that women who sat for lengthy periods every day had double and sometimes triple the risk of a dangerous blood clot. Whilst the women in this study had sat for more than 41 hours per week (on top of their working hours) the research indicates that a sedentary and inactive lifestyle increases the risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

This is serious stuff, since around 25,000 Britons die each year as a result of DVT, and whilst it is more common in the over 60s, more young people are increasingly being diagnosed due to a sedentary lifestyle brought about by technology and the propensity to work –and play - whilst seated.

Deep vein thrombosis is caused when the wall of a blood vessel is damaged (through injury or surgery) or if the blood clots more easily than usual (due to genetics or as a result of medications). But it can also be triggered when the blood flow slows down considerably, such as when we are immobile for long periods of time.

The greatest risk factor for DVT is surgery. Other more publicized risks are those of long haul air travel and the Pill. Many do not realize that just sitting down for too long, without regular breaks, can be just as detrimental to our health.

It's estimated that the average person in Britain spends 12 hours per day sitting down and looking at screens, thus significantly increasing their chances of a clot. Yet many will not be aware of the existence of a clot, since as many as 80% of DVT related clots are asymptomatic and thus can go undetected.

DVT can also be hereditary. Event manager, Manuela Wedam from Austria was 35 when she was diagnosed with DVT. After a long haul flight to South Africa, she experienced cramp-like feelings in the calf that would not go away. Because she is neither overweight, a smoker nor in any of the categories considered 'high risk', doctors did genetic tests and found out that it was hereditary. Treatment meant taking heparin shots and tablets for three months until the thrombus disappeared, and she continues to have to administer shots before every flight or long journey by car.

Hotels for Snorers

In addition to smoking and non-smoking rooms, hotels offer rooms for snorers and for people with troubled sleep. The Crowne Plaza hotel chain already has special rooms which absorb the sounds of snoring, and the night patrol knocks at the doors of those visitors who snore too loudly.

The hotel has also opened special “quiet rooms” for people with light and troubled sleep. For those who suffer from insomnia, the walls of the rooms and the head of the bed have special soundproofing. And in the closets of “quiet rooms” one can find pillows, which effectively protect from the sound of snoring, as well as the special equipment which extinguishes the sounds of snoring.

Meanwhile, the doctors remind that snoring is not a funny disease. It can and must be fought with more radical metgods than a patch on the nose. Snoring is caused by partial blockage of the upper respiratory tract and can lead to serious consequences, such as cardiovascular diseases. Hotels for snorers have already been opened in Europe.

Predisposes to Excess Weight in Women

The researchers claim that traits of character can help identify if a woman is predisposed to certain diseases, such as gaining extra weight.

The scientists have been able to prove that impulsive ladies suffer from undesirable pounds more often. Being conscientious and reliable is typical of buxom women. They often yield to the temptation and cannot walk past a cafe or a store without buying something tasty. The experts say that in order to maintain the desirable weight one should have the right diet and a sustained program of physical activity. These two activities require restraint and dedication.

The researchers from the National Institute of Nutrition claim that some personal traits of character do influence women’s weight. It is important to take into account such factors as the weight itself and the light weight indicating body mass. For example, such positive traits as integrity, decency, and openness do not help their owner, but, on the contrary, contribute to the process of gaining extra weight, which is later so difficult to get rid of.

According to the experts, aging also contributes to gaining weight, since extra weight comes with age more and more often. The researchers led by Angelina Sutin, M.D., have found that overweight occurs mostly in the cases of impulsive and emotional people, as well as in those who are very brave and like to run the risk. Ladies with cynical and aggressive character have a slender figure, and they are also more competitive.

Sing to Lose Weight

The researchers from Harvard University claim that singing has a beneficial effect on the body. It does not matter if a person has voice and a good ear for music or not. Nor is it important whether a person remembers the song lyrics by heart.

Scientists conducted an experiment in several U.S clinics. The patients were asked to sing often. It turned out that those who sang felt pain relief, and it helped them to recover quicker. Experts likened the effect of singing to performing physical exercises.

Doctors explained that during singing the human body gets enriched with oxygen, which improves blood circulation, maintains muscle tone, and supports the heart and lungs.

The experts said that there are techniques, which cure stuttering, relieve the effects of stress and even help to lose weight via singing.

Wrong Decisions Drive Women Crazy

All women take certain decisions every day, and it does not matter if they do it consciously or at the subconscious level, without making any effort. Nevertheless, sometimes we have to suffer for hours or even days before making the right choice.

However, the lady still has to stop and choose one thing. And then the question arises, why she chose that. Which factors influence the process of decision-making? Scientists believe that it depends on maintaining control, which is adapted and is activated in certain areas of the brain.

Anything that a woman does suggests making a choice, even if she does not think about it. If one analyzes everything, it is easy to get a mental disorder. For example, no one thinks about which foot to move first when making a step. Sometimes ladies take choices for granted and neither attach more importance to them nor give them special attention. John Delgado of the University of California claims it is true, and unconscious choices can often be justified.

There has been an experiment involving both men and women of different ages. The computer screen displayed two things, and the participants had to choose one of them. Sometimes, selecting was done unconsciously, and the participants were unable to define why their decision was like that. According to the experts, the issue also involves the social aspect as an important one because the decision is closely linked to psychological well-being. Mental disorders are the result of a long and torturous mental activity associated with finding the correct answer to any question.

No More Animal Killing for Meat

The scientists from the University of Maastricht (The Netherlands) said they developed a method for producing meat without killing animals. They managed to create and introduce to public opinion the first hamburger grown in vitro. To create such a hamburger, they used meat derived from stem cells.

The researchers reported that about 10000 cattle stem cells are required for the production of such meat. In certain laboratory conditions, the number of these stem cells is then increased by more than a billion times, and the result is a product almost identical to the natural beef in its composition and appearance.

The scientists believe that their finding is of great importance, as the world’s population is growing, and eventually there will be a huge shortage of natural meat. The product, which was named in-vitro meat, is still under development. Now the scientists are looking for the volunteers who would dare to try a new product. In case there aren’t any, Dr. Post, the head of the research, promised to try his creation himself.

Marilyn Monroe’s Sculpture in Chicago

The Windy City has been truly graced by a new landmark – a giant effigy of Marilyn Monroe!

The statue, creation of artist Seward Johnson, stands 26 ft tall and weighs over 30,000 lbs. It was made from stainless steel and aluminum. The legendary actress is perpetuated as she is remembered in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch – trying to keep her windswept dress skirt in place.

The teasing sculpture is erected on Michigan Avenue, towering over a New York City subway grate. It will remain decorating the square until the spring of the following year.

The sculptor said that he had been spellbound by the image and recreated it as an attempt to grasp its lasting impact on the people. Marilyn Monroe, added Johnson, 80, is an evergreen symbol of beauty combined with “teasing sexuality.”

In spite of that statement the statue wasn’t made very convenient for those who will believe that being seen or photographed when peeping upskirt is a great piece of fun.

Under Water Fitness Trend

Under Water Fitness Trend
A summer version of a cardio workout was developed in the U.S. The treadmill from the gym was moved to the pool. It is interesting that during a refreshing workout the “athlete” is not wearing a bathing suit and flip flops, but the sportswear for running and usual trainers.

According to the experts, it is a very fast, safe, and effective way to lose weight and get into good shape. The fact is that the usual running can do harm to your body: there is a risk of leg and spine injuries. But water softens the load.

Besides, water resistance leads to the expenditure of more energy. Compare: during the normal running you burn about 8 calories per minute, while during water running – up to 11.5 calories.

Another important point is that during the workout it is important to stay upright. Thus there is a resistance forcing muscles of the entire body to work.

Many Hollywood stars have already experimented with the novelty. Jennifer Aniston is a big fan of swimming pools. She runs in water for 15 minutes daily.

Taking Birth Control Pills Prevents Injuries

As a result of a three-year investigation held by Australian scientists from the University of Melbourne, it was discovered that women get most injuries during the early and mid-cycle.

Scientists explain this surprising fact by sharp fluctuations in estrogen levels. At the beginning of the cycle, the level is very low. This causes muscle tone reduction and poor coordination. As a result, a woman can get hurt in the most ordinary everyday circumstances. In the middle of the cycle, the estrogen level reaches its peak rapidly.

Long ago it was proved that during this very period a woman looks the most attractive because estrogen improves skin elasticity. But that is not all. The tendons stretch and become more elastic, and this increases the risk of injury. Scientists claim that taking hormonal contraceptives in any form can reduce this risk by reducing the fluctuations in estrogen levels.

Tooth Health Helps Get Pregnant

Australian scientists have found that the girls, who are planning to get pregnant, must be especially careful maintaining oral hygiene in order to increase the likelihood of successful conception.

According to the results of a series of recent studies, problems with teeth and gums can have a negative impact on female fertility. Thus, the women who had gum diseases required on average two more months to get pregnant than the girls who did not have such problems.

The experiment conducted by the scientists from the University of Western Australia, in Perth, shows that it took the ladies, who were brushing their teeth and using dental floss regularly, approximately five months for the conception, while those women who were not so careful in following the rules of oral hygiene needed about seven months to get pregnant. According to Professor Roger Hart, the leading author of the study, it proves that the women who want to become mothers, should necessarily consult their dentist.

The doctors explain the connection between women’s tooth health and their fertility by the fact that periodontal disease leads to the accumulation of a huge number of different pathogens in the mouth. These pathogens cause bad breath and may spread all over the body due to bleeding gums. As a result, other inflammatory reactions may start, and that will have a negative impact on the process of implantation of the embryo in the uterus.

Useless Things Women Pack for Holidays

Vacation season, and quite a lot of women may be packing up this very minute. Or, rather, over-packing, for a comprehensive survey of women’s holiday habits commissioned by Gocompare.com discovered that on the average a woman’s baggage will contain 26 items that will remain unused throughout the vacation.

As a rule a woman uses about 34 pieces of clothing over a week’s holiday, but when packing up she ends up with 60 believing they will come in handy.

Whatever she may have thought at home, when she arrives at the place she never bothers with almost half of her suitcase!

Their men being often quite content with a pair of shorts and a spare T-shirt, 77% of the polled women confessed they would be choosing hard what to wear.

The survey reveals that a female prefers to take along 19 top pieces like blouses, T-shirts, some kind of evening wear, maybe even a cardigan, of which 9 won’t get out at all.

The nether stuff – shorts, trousers, and leggings – will be around 16 in number, half of which will be just looked at and laid away.

Out of 9 accessories – pashminas, hats, sunglasses and so on – 5 might as well have stayed on their shelves at home. Among those that remain unused are also some underwear and bikini plus a pair of shoes.

The comment from Gocompare.com pointed out that women take too much pain choosing their daily wear, so a seven day break throws them in a flurry. “Women like to prepare for every eventuality,” the spokesperson said, and they pack with consideration for the weather, day trips, and all imaginable kinds of daytime and evening activities.

Their too-heavy suitcases may be the reason behind the fact that 58% women experience the difficulty of staying within a weight limit when vacationing.

Longevity Secret Revealed

Possible that the next generation will have good opportunities and prospects to help develop new life-prolonging technologies? Could our children live up to 150 years, and their grandchildren – be able to celebrate a millennium?

According to a British research, the director of which is Aubrey de Grey, such an opportunity will appear, but only in prospect. The scientist believes that the first step towards this goal has already been made, as for the past 25 years many technologies have been developed to help slow down the aging process.

A case was recorded when a man lived till 150. Now he is, of course, no longer alive. But this shows that nothing is impossible. According to the forecasts that experts make, already in the next two decades a man could be born who will be able to live till 1000. Alongside with the development of medicine in such areas as gene therapy and stem cell research, as well as the search for tools to better stimulate the immune system, other methods of prolonging life are being developed.

The researchers hope that soon health service will be much more simplified. We will need to visit just one doctor who will make the necessary conclusions about our health; hence, the problem of aging will be solved. The forecast by de Grey, of course, might seem a little dubious. Life expectancy increases by three months each year, and many experts claim that by 2030 there will be many people over 100 years old. For example, in Japan in 2010, there were 4400 centenarian people. Experts define aging as a life-long accumulation of cellular and molecular damage in the body, which can – from a practical point of view – give doctors an opportunity to correct flaws.

Water Deficit and Depression

WHO predicts that by 2020 depression will have taken the first place in the world among all diseases, ahead of today’s leaders – infectious and cardiovascular diseases. Today it is the most common disease that affects women. U.S. scientists believe that this tendency may be connected with water deficit in the diet of a modern man.

The researchers from Tufts University have conducted an experiment during which some participants received water in the desired and in limited amounts. As a result, the representatives of the second group had a depressed mood, fatigue, and the signs of anger and confusion as well. It is not so obvious, but the experts have noted the reduction of their ability to think.

The experts claim that the amount of water necessary for the normal functioning of the body is individual and depends on the weight, physical activity of a person and weather. In any case, an average person needs 8-9 cups of plain water a day.

Smart Women Can’t Reach Orgasm

It is more difficult for smart women to reach orgasm. This conclusion was made by German scientists. The thing is that smart women are too busy thinking during sex.

The study has shown that the level of a woman’s education has direct influence on her sex life. Thus, the researchers have found that educated women rarely tend to be satisfied with their sex life.

The researchers conducted a survey during the experiment. The survey showed that approximately 60% of women with higher education, had constant difficulty in reaching orgasm. Only 40% of women with secondary education had complaints about similar problems. More than 2,000 women aged from 18 to 49 years took part in the survey.

According to the scientists, the problem of highly educated women is in fine mental organization which is created by higher education in particular. Educated women tend to be more scrupulous in selecting a partner, and it is more difficult for them to overcome any problems with their partner.

Pole Dancers Risk to Develop Osteoporosis

It has long been known that female athletes experience hormonal dysfunction. Recently, a group of scientists from the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, have proved the connection between pole dancing and the development of osteoporosis in women.

Pole dancers suffer from thinning bones due to the poor diet and strenuous exercise for their limbs, Dr. Anne Hoch says. Exhausting diets do not compensate for energy loss.

As a result, there is a violation of the menstrual function, eating disorders, and there also appear early signs of cardiovascular disease. As a result, the density of the tissue decreases, and the pole dancer’s bones get thinner.

Osteoporosis used to affect women just before the period of a menopause, however, the disease is now increasingly recorded in young girls who are actively involved in dancing. The doctors examined more than 300 pole dancers at the age of 20 to 30 years with an average weight of 55 kilograms.

About 80% of the girls had problems with the gastrointestinal tract due to poor eating and demonstrated a tendency to have thinning bones. 27% of women had no menstrual periods, and 36% demonstrated a significant change in the density of bone tissue. According to the ultrasound examinations, the symptoms of atherosclerosis of blood vessels have been diagnosed in 64% of the pole dancers. The researchers recommend that the dancers review their diet and exercise.

Intelligence Prolongs Life

The mortality of intelligent people is several times lower than that of poorly educated people. Why?

British gerontologists have conducted a series of surveys to discover that the mortality of intellectuals is a few times smaller than that of low-educated people, as the magazine The Psychological Science informs.

This conclusion has been made after the 20-year study of two thousand volunteers of both sexes, which shows that people with high IQ are four times more likely to reach the old age.

It is interesting that the experts explain this phenomenon by the increased stress resistance of smart people. According to the experts, due to their psychological resistance, intelligent people can react to the vicissitudes of life with less anxiety and negative emotions: facing the trouble, they do not fall into the state of uncontrollable panic, they analyze the problem and look for the way to cope with difficulties.

The Psychological Science journal shows that, according to the results of the research, only 63% of the people with IQ 85 have a good chance to reach the senile age. At the same time, elderly people whose IQ is equal to 115 are centenarians in 90% of cases.

Girls in Red Are More Successful

Women in red are more successful. The scientists from the American University of Rochester have discovered that the women dressed in red clothes attract men more than others. What is the reason?

The researchers explain this fact saying that the stronger sex is guided by primitive instincts when choosing a partner. The scientists believe that a woman dressed in predominantly red colors will be invited to date sooner than a woman dressed in the clothes of another color.

100 men, mostly students, took part in the experiment. The participants were asked to look at the pictures of not very attractive women. The men had to assess the rate of their beauty, as well as the desire to kiss and to have a love affair with those women. The frames of the pictures were decorated in red, white, gray, and green colors.

As a result of the experiment, it was revealed that the photograph of a woman which had been framed in red, seemed more attractive to the men than the same photo, but in another color. The same result was recorded while watching the photos of the women dressed in clothes of different colors. The red one has defeated other colors. According to the scientists, men prefer red color because it makes them feel love, even if it is purely on the subconscious level.

Simple Weight Loss Technique That Always Works

I know what you are thinking. I too tried Coitus Interruptus as a newly wed and it didn't work, my elder daughter is testimony to the technique's pitfall...No! No pun intended!

But Dietus Interruptus, a weight control technique that I Al Gored, certainly does.

Like its more lewd counterpart, Dietus interruptus sounds challenging, because it involves interrupting something pleasurable, but seriously, who would equate the two pleasures?

Dietus Interruptus is definitely the easier of the two 'interrupts,' besides being the more effective.

If you haven't guessed already, Dietus Interrupuss involves interrupting your meal, usually to complete an unfinished household chore. I will get into the finer points of the technique later, but first for some science.

One reason why we over-eat is because while eating there is a lag between the amount of food that we have eaten and the corresponding feeling of satiation. By the time you feel full, you are way too full!

The problem is compounded when you are eating carbs because they usually don't involve much chewing.

Before I go any further, let me back track in time.

During the second half of last year, I shed nearly 30lb in 6 months, and have successfully maintained my weight since then.

I didn't use Dietus Interruptus, or DI - since you are probably as fed up of the pseudo latin mumbo jumbo as I am - for shedding my weight, just a high protein diet.

Once down to my desired weight I had no problem maintaining it.

I faced a challenge early this year when my wife had to go and stay with my daughter for five months doing granny duties. Besides managing the house all by myself, I had to cook and serve my own food.

Household work - as the ladies already know, but some men never find out - is tiring and can stir up an appetite.

Here is how the problem with the household work generated appetite gets aggravated.

It's hard to cooks single helpings, besides food tends to be most delicious immediately after it has been cooked.

Cooking your food and then laying it on a table to eat it when you are all by yourself seems like a pretty dumb thing to do, considering you would be generating more work for yourself, not to mention more load for the dishwasher.

Splitting the food into two helpings, putting one in the fridge to have at a later time, also appears lame.

Let us just say, the temptation to eat all the freshly cooked food is great. The overriding thought is - screw weight gain, it's a lot easier this way.

This is where DI comes in handy.

Start eating your freshly cooked food, but half way through the meal look around for an unfinished household chores. You will see one almost immediately, and when that happens tell yourself that you will return to your meal after quickly finishing the chore.

Chances are, when you do finish your chore you won't feel like finishing the meal. The idea of putting the leftover in the fridge will appear a lot more appealing.

That's DI for you.

DI is drastic technique. There are easier ways of allowing your hunger pangs to subside.

Take your time eating your meal - chew your food, indulge in dinner table talk, or flip through a magazine while eating if you are alone.

Take hot soup, which is not cream based, before your main meal. It does not contain many calories, but takes a while to consume, allowing your body's feedback mechanism to kick in. Chose a broth or tomato based soup.

You can alternate or combine soup with salad before a meal.

IYou are welcome to try your own variation of DI and if you find it effective share it with the readers by posting a comment.

Win a Child in the Lottery

Just in a few days, there starts a unique in its kind IVF lottery in the UK, in which all women interested have a chance to purchase a lottery ticket worth £ 20 and get a chance to win … a child.

The campaign operates within a charity move to support the couples who have difficulty with procreation and forced to turn to a fairly expensive in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF).

The lucky one to win the jackpot is due a 25000 £ award, which she can spend on an individual course of infertility treatment in one of the best clinics in the country. As the initiators of this idea note, the basis for its development were the statistics, according to which almost three-quarters of public health-care agencies no longer provide this service free. The opponents of the lottery, on the contrary, believe it to be humiliating.

As part of a prize, they provide not only a free IVF with the accommodation in an expensive hotel and transportation to the clinic with a personal driver, but also the provision of donor sperm or ovule. Not only traditional infertile couples may take part in the lottery, but also homosexuals and lesbians. At first, it is planned to raffle off the top prize once a month, but later, if the event is a success, the organizers want to shorten this period to two weeks.

Children Do Grow during Sleep

The experts from the University of Oslo have proved that children do grow mainly during sleep. Of course, they grow during the day as well, but the rate of growth at night is 43% higher than of that during the daytime.

It has been found in the course of the experiment that girls grow faster than boys. And with the growth, children gain weight and fat mass in particular. However, the researchers have not managed so far to clarify the mechanisms of sleep at night which are responsible for the growth of children and adolescents. The experts explain that the production of growth hormone happens mostly during sleep.

It has been noticed that children who suffer from certain sleep disorders grow not so fast. In addition, the immune system is strengthened during sleep. Therefore children need plenty of sleep to be healthy and keep growing.

Breast Implants Are Safe

Breast Implants, in a small number of women, can result in complications that are not life threatening and easily remedied. Some women have had implants for over 25 years and believe they made the right choice. Your complete guide to safety of breast implants.

For years, Tracey Stevens from the UK suffered a mystery illness which left her with joint pain and extreme fatigue. Tests revealed her silicone breast implants had ruptured and the silicone was leaking into her blood. They were made by Poly Implant Prothese, (PIP), a French firm which was the third largest manufacturer of implants before it went into administration at the end of last year, leaving victims struggling to get compensation.

Tracey's cheap implants lacked an inner layer to stop them leaking, in what experts believe was a cost-cutting measure, and they contained a gel probably intended for mattresses which had not had safety tests. Up to 50,000 UK women, including some breast cancer survivors, have implants filled with this gel. So, just how safe are breast implants?

Breast Implants are not lifetime devices

Erica Jefferson from the FDA's Office of Public Affairs says, "Breast implants are not lifetime devices. The longer a woman has silicone gel-filled breast implants, the more likely she is to experience complications. One in 5 patients who receive implants for breast augmentation will need them removed within 10 years of implantation. For patients who receive implants for breast reconstruction, as many as 1 in 2 will require removal 10 years after implantation.

The most frequently observed complications and outcomes are capsular contracture (hardening of the area around the implant), reoperation (additional surgeries) and implant removal. Other common complications include implant rupture, wrinkling, asymmetry, scarring, pain and infection.

The FDA is recommending that women continue to routinely follow up with their health care provider. Erica says, "Get routine MRIs to detect a rupture that you may not be aware of (silent rupture). The agency recommends that women with silicone gel-filled breast implants get screenings for silent ruptures three years after they get implants and every two years after that."

Jennifer Kyne, Press Officer for The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) agrees that breast implants are likely to need replacing with consequent further surgery and expense. "A young woman who has implants may expect to have further operations in her lifetime to maintain the beneficial effects of the implants. The length of time a breast implant lasts is unknown and may vary. All women should be informed that their breast implants may need replacing at their first appointment so that they are aware of future costs and potential implications" she says.

Only a very small number of women have complications

Douglas McGeorge, a spokesperson and past president of BAAPS, is a leading plastic and cosmetic surgeon from Cheshire in the United Kingdom. He says that the FDA is always incredibly cautious, and perhaps too much so. "No implant is sold as a permanent cure. However, if you don't have a problem with an implant, it may never need changing. For complications, there is a limitation involved in fitting any foreign body into the body and that is that the body will form a scar around it. On a proportion of people, that scar can tighten as it matures. That is called capsular contracture – stretching of the scar tissue around the implant due to tightening as it matures. This is not so much a complication but a limitation of healing which will occur in up to 5% of people – a very small proportion. And in my practice, it is a lot less than that. People sometimes say, 'my breasts went hard'. This is not a complication but a limitation of healing.

"I always tell my patients that if they have any concerns, to come back and see me. If you develop for instance, capsular contracture, the chances are it will be a few years down the line, so if you are taking out the old scars, it would make sense after a few years has passed to put new implants at the same time. However, capsular contraction is very unusual in my practice and if it happens, I do corrections free of charge, but for most people, it would be a similar price to having new implants.

Douglas is not dismissive of prospective problems, but says that women shouldn't be overly cautious either. "You don't expect a piece of clothing or a car to last forever. It might need some maintenance along the way. You must never consider an implant as something you do once in your life. If you are unfortunate and develop problems, you might have to have something done in the future. Things can change, gravity can stretch the tissues, or drooping can occur."

Implants and screening concerns

Douglas also allays any concerns regarding the possibility of implants complicating screening for breast cancer. He explains, "If you take a standard mammogram which is taken obliquely across the breast, the implant will shadow across the breast tissue, so the machine just needs to be adjusted accordingly. It will then pick up any abnormalities as it would usually. If women are still worried, they can have an MRI scan or ultrasound. Also, bear in mind that since the breast tissue is sitting on top of the implants, you can still examine yourself as you would normally."

However, the MHRA suggests that the presence of silicone gel filled breast implants may interfere with standard mammography as silicone is radiopaque, and the physical presence of the implant may obscure part of the breast tissue and distort breast structure. The Agency says that the amount of interference varies depending on a variety of factors including the position of the implant. However studies indicate that breast cancer in women with breast implants is not diagnosed at a later stage compared with women without implants.

Deposits of calcium containing salts (calcification) are known to occur in the tissue around implants. These deposits are believed to increase with time and may remain once the implant has been removed. Although these calcifications are not considered harmful in themselves, they can be seen on mammograms and may interfere with mammographic findings and interpretation of results. Since calcification may also be

seen in women with breast cancer, further tests (including a biopsy) may be needed to differentiate between calcification due to breast implants or cancer.

To increase sensitivity, a different mammographic technique needs to be used in women with breast implants. It is therefore vital that the centre carrying out the mammography is aware of the presence of breast implants (and the type of implant if known) before the mammography takes place. Mobile breast screening units may not have the necessary facilities for screening women with breast implants and it may therefore be necessary to refer these women to a fixed breast screening unit.

Concern regarding the possibility that the pressures used during mammography might damage the implant should not discourage women from undergoing this procedure. There is only anecdotal information in the literature regarding the breast implant rupture during mammography. The radiographer should however take this potential risk into account when performing the mammography.

Best thing I've ever done

Hanna Johnson's aunt had breast implants in the early eighties and only now needs one replaced. Hanna, 23, a model from Australia, decided to have implants in December last year and says it is 'the best thing I've ever done' although she is aware that implants are not forever. It's early days yet, but she has suffered no complications. "My skin is still a little numb between my nipple and my arm pit but nothing to really worry about," she says. Hanna opted to have her surgery in Malaysia as it was cheaper. She says, "Once I did the research I realised their hospitals were better rated and more up to date with technology than ours. Also, it cost $5000 compared to $10,000 to $15,000 if I'd have them done locally, and I was able to have the surgery right away rather than being put on an 18 month waiting list."

In the UK, the price of implants depends on the chosen manufacturer and the style, but good quality implants generally cost from £600 to £1200, and surgery is around £5000 all inclusive. There are some cheaper implants around, but Poly Implant Prothese is a good example of why not to use a cheap product.

Blood Pressure Regulation Could Become Easier with New Discovery

Newly discovered regulatory pathway in blood vessels could pave way to more efficient management of blood pressure.

In a collaborative study done by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the British Heart Foundation (BHF), researchers found that malfunctioning of the potassium ion channel called Kv7.4 – contributes to the increase in blood pressure.

Dr. Iain Greenwood from St George's, University of London and his team were able to establish Kv7.4 channel's pivotal role in maintaining the extent to which arteries are constricted or dilated.

Published in this week's issue of the journal Circulation, the study found that rodents with high blood pressure, in some cases, had Kv7.4 channels in their blood vessels that were not functioning properly because of being blocked.

"The muscles in the walls of your blood vessels play a role in adjusting blood pressure and if they need to increase it, they squeeze the blood vessels more tightly to literally put mechanical pressure on your blood," explained Dr Iain Greenwood

"The problem is if the Kv7.4 channels cannot function, the muscle cells overreact to the signals the body is giving to increase blood pressure. We think that in the animals we studied the redundant Kv7.4 channels contributed markedly to their high blood pressure."

Professor Douglas Kell, Chief Executive, BBSRC said "If we are to have long, healthy lives, we need to understand how our bodies cope with the demands we place on them. Increasing our knowledge of the biology that underpins normal, healthy processes will pave the way for future strategies to prevent or treat health problems. Maintaining healthy blood pressure is an important part of keeping us all well and so this research could be of great benefit to many people in the future."

An insight into the role the K+ ion channel proteins play in maintaining healthy body functioning such as blood pressure has opened new possibilities for molecular medicine.

Researchers hope they can use this knowledge to develop new strategies for adjusting blood pressure using drug treatments that home in on very specific targets with fewer side effects.

Women Hate Shopping

Perhaps it will surprise men who are forced to bear hours of regular shopping promenades visiting clothing stores together with their girlfriends, but it has recently been discovered by the scientists from the UK that, in fact, almost half of women do not get any pleasure from shopping.

Moreover, the survey has revealed that approximately 44% of girls have nothing but horror at the thought about having to go through a lot of clothes in search of the suitable things.

At the sane time, the ladies, who have just become mothers, are especially reluctant to go shopping. As acknowledged by 47% of the participants of the survey with children under the age of five, they try to select the clothes both fashionable and fitting that would conceal the flaws as much as possible. In addition, about half of mature women feel certain unease when visiting boutiques, believing that their products are aimed at young people exclusively.

Thus, over a third of the respondents (37%) complain about having some difficulty in finding the clothing that fits their age. In addition, one of the leading authors of the study and a representative of the market research company which supervised the research, Michelle Stratton, claims that another major problem for the majority of female customers is the selection of things to their size. This is due to the fact that many famous brands produce small size clothing which makes bigger ladies feel uncomfortable about their constitution.

Lost Sleep Can’t Be Compensated at the Weekends

If you are used to not getting enough sleep on weekdays and working like a horse, you probably spend a great deal of time in bed at the weekends, thinking you can compensate for lack of sleep this way. However, the experts from the Medical College of Pennsylvania have another opinion.

They say, however much a person will sleep at the weekends, he or she would not be able to have a proper rest. The researchers acquainted a few volunteers with a certain scheme, which they had to follow during a specified period. During the first four nights, they had to sleep for eight hours, six nights after that – for six hours, as we usually do on weekdays. The following three nights, all the participants of the experiment were allowed to sleep for ten hours.

It was found out that long sleep on Saturdays can help to get rid of the state of sleepiness, but it cannot help to restore body strength and vitality. The researchers have noted that such a relaxation can help women more than men. Nevertheless, neither the former nor the latter can completely get rid of fatigue with the help of long sleep at the weekends.

Kitchen Size and Woman’s Weight

Experts have found out that woman obesity may be due to many seemingly minor factors, such as the choice of dishes, refrigerator, or even the colour of kitchen walls.

According to the official statistics, since 1920, women have put on a few centimeters. Thus, the increase in breast circumference makes 1.3 cm on average, waist circumference – 2.54 cm. hip circumference – about 1.9 cm. Besides, the United Kingdom currently holds the third place in the world for the number of obese women.

The researchers have also noticed another interesting trend: the area of a typical kitchen almost doubled over the same period, and now is perhaps the most important room in the house. Experts note that earlier it was not appropriate to stay in the kitchen, which usually resembled something like a small, dark pantry, except for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But now, thanks to the efforts of interior designers, kitchens have become much more attractive.

As a result, it is in the kitchen that many ladies spend most of their free time. According to Gaynor Bassel, a nutritionist and one of the leading authors of a recent study, this room has become not only a place for eating: here women can read, talk on the phone, watch TV or simply sit down and have rest. Accordingly, such actions are often accompanied by unconscious eating and getting extra calories.

Plaster to Treat Nut Allergy

French scientists have suggested treating allergy to peanuts by using plaster. The new treatment was developed by Pierre-Henri Benhamou and Christophe Dupont.

At present time, desensitization (reduced sensitivity) of the body to allergens is used to treat different types of allergy. With this approach, small doses of substances that cause allergies are regularly introduced into the patient’s blood. Gradually, the immune system “gets used” to the effects of the allergen and causes no excessive reaction as it enters the body.

Created by the French scientists, the plaster contains peanut allergens, which after the application of small doses penetrates the skin. According to the developers, this method of application, unlike injections, is able to reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions, whose most terrible case is an anaphylactic shock. The tests aimed at evaluating the safety of a new plaster have started in the U.S. and Europe.

During the next stage of the research, the scientists intend to determine the dose of allergens which will be contained in one plaster and the time of its use. Dupont believes that to prevent the development of an anaphylactic shock one will have to use tha plaster for about a year. According to the assumptions of the researchers, the medical product will be released onto the market in a matter of three to four years. In a similar way, the developers have suggested treating allergy with dairy products.

Hair Extensions Harm Woman’s Health

The experts call on women to give up hair extensions. In their opinion, there is no surer way to aggravate one’s health than a suchlike procedure.

Meanwhile, the demand for false hair has grown over the past few years by 40%. At the same time, more and more people began to ask doctors for help because of the negative effects of hair extensions, as the expert on health of hair and scalp from the Institute of Trichologists Steve O’bryan claims.

The fact is that hair follicles are affected by extra locks and experience stress. This can cause inflammation and hair loss. The experts emphasize that the longer the false locks are, the more it harms the hair. And glue, wax and other methods used to secure the extra hair on the head lead to breakage and thinning.

Depression Starts in the Bowels

Canadian researchers from McMaster University have demonstrated for the first time the effect of intestinal microflora on the chemical processes in the brain that govern the behavior and mood. Human bowels are inhabited by billions of bacteria that perform various functions and are important for sustaining life: they accumulate energy from food, protect against infections, and deliver nourishment to the cells of the intestine. Any disbalance can lead to serious consequences.

Theoretically, we can assume that the mood of a person with impaired intestinal microflora may be flawed by knowing this fact by itself and having the unpleasant sensations associated with it. But with laboratory mice the psychological aspect cannot be of great importance. Nevertheless, the researchers have observed that the effect of the antibiotic on a healthy microflora of bowels leads to changes in the behavior of mice! They become less cautious and prudent, and have elevated level of anxiety. These changes are accompanied by an increased amount of neurotrophic factor in the brain that is associated with depression and anxiety. Once the antibiotic is terminated and the intestinal microflora recovers, the chemical processes in one’s brain also come back to the normal level, as well as behavior.

To confirm that it is the bacteria that play a decisive role, the researchers used the mice which did not have enough intestinal bacteria and provided them with a microflora of mice with different “tempers”. It was discovered that when genetically passive mice received the microflora of more active individuals, they themselves became much more active and brave. Conversely, the mice which were more active by nature, became lazy and less mobile after the introduction of the microflora of their slow and passive relatives.

Of course, the behavior is determined by many factors, but in cases of its frustration (perhaps up to autism (!), the scientists recommend that eveyone pay attention to the balance of intestinal microflora. However, the bacterial factor in the behavior needs further study.

Differnce Between Normal Foods And Organic Foods

In recent years, the majority of people have become so selective in food that they prefer organic products because they are healthier and less harmful to the environment. But now this statement is doubted greatly. The research conducted on organic and normal foods grown by the farmers in Minnesota, has revealed that there was 19 times more E. Coli infection on the farms growing organic products and using new organic fertilizers (received less than a year before) if to compare with the farms that use older stuff. The scientists attribute this to the fact that many pathogens are able to remain active up to 60 days or more in the compost and soil. One more dangerous thing is that antifungal agents are not used when growing organic foods. Hence, the risk of mold growth and mycotoxin produced by fungi. So, going to a farm or buying food in a bio-supermarket, think twice, what is indeed less harmful to your health.

Women Suffer from Food Addiction

According to leading dietitians, there has developed a very popular tendency, according to which women fall into a real dependence on food.

However, it is not just that some ladies eat too much. Their thoughts about food become a major source of stress and anxiety among girls. As noted by one of the leading authors of a recent study, Professor Francis Largeman-Roth, the severity of these effects in many ways depends on specific characteristics of the diet.

So, the doctor recommends that women refuse products with caffeine and wheat flour (white bread and biscuits), as they cause drastic fluctuations in blood sugar levels, which in turn has a significant impact on a woman’s mood. On the contrary, the researchers claim that red meat or white meat rich in iron will bring benefit, particularly to those ladies who regularly feel tired at the end of the day.

According to Professor Largeman-Roth, food products with sedative properties also include brown rice, macaroni made of durum flour, and whole-grain bread. Despite a large number of various vitamins, legumes as well as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli are recommended at a minimum. The nutritionists warn that eating them in large quantities may cause bloating. Of course, sugary fizzy drinks are not useful for the body as well.

Cell Phone Declared a Carcinogen

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, WHO (IARC) announced on May 31 that a mobile phone is a potential carcinogen. Its active use increases the risk of malignant brain tumor, glioma, by 40%.

The active use in this case presupposes 30 minutes a day for 10 years. Before announcing the mobile phone a potential carcinogen, the working group of IARC had reviewed hundreds of scientific publications on this topic. According to the leader of the researchers, Jonathan Samet (USA), they continue to gather information, but they have already obtained enough data for the conclusion they have made.

It is very simple to reduce the risk to near zero – it means to remove the phone from the head during a phone call, that is to use a headset or to use SMS-correspondence.

Frequent Business Trips Lead to Obesity

U.S. doctors have found that frequent business trips threaten with premature aging and obesity, as the Science journal suggests in its review of the news.

The scientists have discovered that business trips lead to a sharp deterioration of health if a person spends more than two weeks a month elsewhere. It is reflected in the rapid gain of weight, increasing the lower indices of blood pressure and other violations of well-being.

The experts have come to this conclusion having studied the medical records of thirteen thousand working Americans, 80% of whom spend at least one day a month in a business trip, and 1% – spend up to 20 days a month. The analysis shows that the health of those, who spend half a month in trips, is much worse than that of their more “settled” colleagues, who spend from 1 to 6 days per month travelling on business.

The link between business trips and overweight is explained by two arguments: firstly, 81% of business trips are in cars, which are associated with the need to sit for a long time, and secondly, travelling by car is most often characterized by malnutrition: business travelers often have to eat what God has sent, as the Science journal informs.

Massage Effective Treatment For Chronic Lower Back Pain

A recent study boosts claims that massage is an effective treatment for chronic lower back pain.

In the study published in the July 5 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, a group of 400 Group Health Cooperative patients, who had had low back pain for at least three months, were randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments; structural massage, relaLinkxation massage (also called Swedish), or usual care (anti- inflammatory medication) for a period of 10 weeks.

The study found that, 1 out of 3 individuals who received the hour-long massage therapy (both structural and relaxation) self-reported to have significantly less pain or no pain at all. In comparison, of the patients who received the usual care (medication) just 1 in 25 self-reported similar improvements in their back pain.

Patients in the massage groups also reported fewer days in bed, were more active, and used less anti-inflammatory medication than did those with usual care.

"We found the benefits of massage are about as strong as those reported for other effective treatments: medications, acupuncture, exercise, and yoga," said trial leader Daniel C. Cherkin, PhD, a senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute.

"And massage is at least as safe as other treatment options. So people who have persistent back pain may want to consider massage as an option."

The study found both structural and relaxation massage to be equally effective in relieving symptoms for patients.

"The massage therapists assumed structural massage would prove more effective than relaxation massage," explained Karen J. Sherman, Ph.D, MPH. "They were surprised when patients in the relaxation group got so much relief from their back pain."

Scientists are not clear about how the massage therapies brought about improvements, but speculate that, structural or relaxation, or both, massage, may work by stimulating tissue surrounding the strain, or by calming the central nervous system.

In general, its possible that the massage's effects may promote a person's ability to play an active role in their own healing. Such 'nonspecific' effects could include: spending time in a relaxing environment; receiving care from a therapist; getting advice on caring for yourself, such as exercises to do on your own; or becoming more aware of your own body, so you're better able to avoid triggers for your back pain.

"We tested this on people who had not been getting better from the usual medical approaches, Dr. Cherkin said. "If you've tried other things and you're not getting adequate relief, then massage is a reasonable thing to try."

Patients from the study continued to report improvements in their mobility and lesser pain 6 months after receiving the massage therapy.

"As expected with most treatments, the benefits of massage declined over time," Dr. Cherkin said. "But at six months after the trial started, both types of massage were still associated with improved function."

Though relaxation or Swedish massage is more widely available than structural massage that requires extra training and tends to be more expensive, structural massage is more likely to be covered by health insurance.

Milk Truck to Help Breastfeeding Mothers

The idea of milk delivery for moms with babies was conceived by a breastfeeding mom Jill Miller. Though she may have overdone it a bit with her image of a huge nippled boob, the Milk Truck can make the lives of socially active mothers easier. There are too many places in the city where you can’t – or find it pretty uncomfortable for good reasons – feed the baby. Public spaces, shopping malls, restaurants, social events are out of bounds, but the baby doesn’t know it. Neither does it need to, if the Milk Truck catches on.Miller is using the pledge site Kickstarter to raise the necessary funding of $10,000. Meanwhile Pittsburgh moms will be able to avail themselves of the helpful truck during the Andy Warhol Museum’s 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial (September 26 to December 10). The truck will be running for several hours, its location and route available online. It may be a usual sight at concerts and sporting events soon, furnishing comfy nursing space for those who prefer to take the baby along everywhere.
