How to Avoid Overeating in the Restaurants


What a pleasure to dine in summer with the husband or a friend on a summer porch of your favorite cafe! And there are so many interesting dishes to try and so many new restaurants to discover for yourself if you are going on vacation! But there is a problem! Meals in a restaurant should not change your principles of healthy eating!

Andrea Orbeck, a nutrition expert and a fitness instructor, offers Ten Commandments about how to eat in restaurants. We find these tips interesting:

  1. Choose the dishes that are cooked on the grill, steamed, baked, and not fried since the latter contain much oil and harmful fats.
  2. Control your portions. For example, an optimal portion of meat is the size of a deck of cards or a bar of soap, a portion of fish should be the size of a checkbook.
  3. Ask the sauces and dressings to be served separately, and so you will accurately control how much you eat.
  4. When ordering sushi, ask for brown rice.
  5. Always ask to replace potatoes and bread in dishes with vegetables. Many restaurants provide this service.
  6. Ask to serve the bread after the salad, so that you just will not be able to eat too much bread.
  7. If you order pasta dishes or junk food, just ask for a half of your portion to be wrapped for you. You will see, you will be satisfied with a half.
  8. During the meal, drink lemon water (lemon juice, plus water and ice), it will help you burn extra calories.
  9. Watch the amount of alcohol as well. No matter what you drink: beer, wine or spirits – it always means a lot of calories. Alcohol contains nearly twice as much carbohydrate and protein than regular drinks, and that is seven calories per gram.
  10. Look at how the dishes are named. Often there are words in the title, indicating a greater calorie or fat content. For example, such words as: deep-fried, pan-fried, basted, batter-dipped, breaded, creamy, crispy, scalloped, alfredo, au gratin.
