Fish and Nuts Protect Children from Allergy

The researchers have found that omega-3 fatty acids, which are contained in salmon, mackerel, tuna, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds, force the gastrointestinal tract develop in such a way as to activate the immune system.

The scientists from the National French Agricultural Research Institute have discovered that when expectant mothers consume a certain group of polyunsaturated fatty acids, the intestinal walls of their children become more permeable. This allows a greater number of substances and bacteria pass into the bloodstream, causing the immune system to produce antibodies.

Dr. Gael Boudry believes that due to this impact the children’s immune system can develop and mature faster. As a result, the child gets sick less often.

People Don’t Want Redheaded Babies

Sperm bank people are the ones who know, and they are going to stop accepting sperm donations from redheads as the least demanded ones.

The Cryos international network of sperm banks announced that they had gotten enough donations to enable them to pick and choose, so they initiated a research and found out that most of their clients shy away from having redheaded babies.

Except for Ireland, where redheads are going strong, redheaded donors are wanted only if the woman has a penchant for auburn hair or the sterile partner has the same hair color.

According to the largest sperm banks, apart from these cases the demand for redheaded babies is practically negligible.

Women Look at When Chatting to Men

Women are sure to have made a routine from checking out good-looking guys, and the question what their checking order is is interesting enough to warrant some sneaky investigation.

Cosmo For Guys went for New York ladies’ taste in beauty spots on men. They had a cute young fella wear hidden cameras and sent him to engage women in conversation asking the way to some place or other. Cameras were hidden in his glasses, on his arms, crotch and butt, catching the glances of the women he addressed.

Those he spoke to didn’t go much for eye contact, while what interested them most were his brawny arms and the crotch area.

Diet Lowers Cholesterol Level

The researchers from the University of Toronto have discovered that cholesterol can be lowered with the help of a diet based on plants and grains. This approach was tested on a group of 400 volunteers with high cholesterol.

They were divided into 3 groups. The first one had a diet with a low level of saturated fat. But the second and the third groups tested two versions of vegetable diet. In total, the volunteers were on a diet during a period of 6 months.

After this, the people from the first group had a reduction in the level of low density lipoproteins, or “bad cholesterol”, an average of 8 milligrams per deciliter. But the second and the third groups had a decline of cholesterol at the level of 24 and 26 milligrams per deciliter respectively. Moreover, at the beginning of the study the level was usually about 170 milligrams per deciliter, whereas exceeding the level of 160 milligrams was considered high.

The diet was plant-based and included natural fats in the form of nuts, seeds and whole grains. Due to the plants, the diet contained practically no cholesterol. The scientists add that in order to achieve the results one needs to adhere to the vegetarian diet without any indulgences.

Woman World’s Longest Fingernails

She just let them grow, says the 45-year-old singer and mother from Las Vegas who made it into the 2012 edition of the Guinness World Records thanks to her fingernails, the longest this side of paradise. As GWR followers get to know about the new record breakers they realize it is quite possible to get your nails to be as long as Christine Walton’s jaw-dropping 19ft 9in, or almost 602cm. According to the full-clawed lady, these hand decorations are the result of 20-year-long growth.

Walton gets around with 10ft 2in of nails on her left hand and a little shorter right hand; though it may be a little hard to spot, her right-hand nails measure but 9ft 7in.

But what about her manual dexterity, is it impaired heavily? Oh no, shares the singer, she is quite confortable driving, cooking and doing her hair. Actually, the only problem is choosing clothes – she has to keep her hands off some cute shirts because they are sure to be shredded up in no time.

Her record, explains Walton, was not intentional. What with her music and looking after the children, she just stopped trimming her nails at a time, and when she paid attention the next time she found that they were about 9 inches long!

The length of her fingernails equals the length of 5 adult arm spans or 12-year-old boy’s intestines. A killer whale and two mini coopers measure no longer than what she carries on her fingertips!

Airplane Food Tasteless

Airplane Food Tasteless
Many passengers complain about the tasteless food on the plane. The researchers from the University of Manchester have found that the high level of noise is to be blamed.

The noise can affect the strength of taste, and the ease of chewing. A stronger background noise can decrease the sweetness or saltiness of the product in people’s understanding, but it also makes the food crispier. For the same reason, NASA provides the astronauts with the food which has a pronounced flavor. In space, people are also unable to appreciate the taste of foods at the proper level. It is also probable that background noise is one of the key factors there.

The researchers have conducted an experiment involving 48 volunteers who were offered cookies or potato chips and had to put on the headphones with a selection of noises. The more amplified the noise was, the less salty or sweet the foods seemed to the volunteers. According to the scientists, the point is in concentration. If the noise is strong, the person focuses on it, and not on to the taste of the food.

Reducing Weight in a Natural and Healthy Way

We can see people go on a crash diet suddenly and do physical exercises to reduce body weight. They would continue this for a short term and if they don't find the desired result they would only get frustrated and tired. They wouldn't realize that the body only reacts slowly for whatever exercise or diet you follow.

People who follow serious under-eating will achieve nothing and they may lack in nutrients and vitamins that the body needs to stay fit. They forget to remember that our body gets energy from the food we intake and stores the excess energy as fat. Eating more food than the required amount will only lead in gaining weight and obese. The most effective way of eliminating this fat is by reducing the amount of calories you eat.

You need to concentrate on effective changes that can bring permanent change in your eating habits. The real objective of weight loss goals is to sustain these changes over the years. People who dislike gyms can follow exercises like a short 20 minute walk every day. Every time you exercise more than usual, you burn more calories than usual. To further improve your fitness levels, you can involve yourself in aerobics classes, running, walking, swimming and cycling.

Cutting calories may not be an enjoyable exercise because the tastiest foods are all high caloried. So, if you need to reduce weight, you need the will power to stop eating junk food. You can consume water instead of fizzy drinks and skimmed milk instead of whole milk. Reduce the amount of food you eat and stop adding sugar tea or coffee. Cut out sugary biscuits, snacks and alcohols.

fitness 10 tips

  1.
  2. Start your day with breakfast.
Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long night without food. And it can help you do better in school. Easy to prepare breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night's pizza!
  3. Get Moving!
It's easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Take a 10-minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.
  4. Snack smart.
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips and candy are OK for occasional snacking.
  5. Work up a sweat.
Vigorous work-outs - when you're breathing hard and sweating - help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging, or dancing. Follow-up with activities that help make you stronger such as push-ups or lifting weights. Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.
  6. Balance your food choices - don't eat too much of any one thing.
You don't have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries and ice cream to eat healthy. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron and calcium from a variety of foods. Balancing food choices from the Food Guide Pyramid and checking out the Nutrition Facts Panel on food labels will help you get all these nutrients.
  7. Get fit with friends or family.
Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special physical activity event, like a bike ride or hiking, with a group each week.
  8. Eat more grains, fruits and vegetables.
These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals and fiber. Besides, they taste good! Try breads such as whole-wheat, bagels and pita. Spaghetti and oatmeal are also in the grain group.
Bananas, strawberries and melons are some great tasting fruits. Try vegetables raw, on a sandwich or salad.

  9. Join in physical activities at school.
Whether you take a physical education class or do other physical activities at school, such as intramural sports, structures activities are a sure way to feel good, look good and stay physically fit.
  10. Foods aren't good or bad.
A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part -- or food -- is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt while others may have more vitamins or fiber. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. Fit in a higher-fat food, like pepperoni pizza, at dinner by choosing lower-fat foods at other meals. And don't forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, you don't need a third.
  11. Make healthy eating and physical activities fun!
Take advantage of physical activities you and your friends enjoy doing together and eat the foods you like. Be adventurous - try new sports, games and other activities as well as new foods. You'll grow stronger, play longer, and look and feel better! Set realistic goals - don't try changing too much at once.

Miss Universe 2011 Had Cosmetic Surgery

Miss Universe 2011 Had Cosmetic Surgery
The glaring beauty of the new Miss Universe caused some inquiries whether her appearance had been in any way augmented by surgery. But before expanding on particulars it is worth mentioning that the freshly crowned Leila Lopes, former Miss Angola, took Sao Paolo, Brazil, by storm with her radiant loveliness, showing to the world a beauty queen in the most resplendent meaning of the world.

Therefore it’s small wonder that during the press conference following the crowning, Lopes was pelted with questions about her looks. Expectedly someone came up with a question about cosmetic surgery, and Miss Universe replied she had had none of that. The very idea of forcing changes on her natural appearance goes contrary to her upbringing, she said, and all the beauty she had was gained and maintained by getting enough sleep, enough water and enough sunscreen.

Lopes said she had inherited many marvelous principles from her family to which she clings, and one of these is her faithfulness in the inner beauty. The new Miss Universe is sure she has all the reasons to be profoundly “satisfied with the way God created me” and she won’t even think of trying to change something about herself.

Having left behind other top-fivers (from Brazil, China, the Ukraine and the Philippines), Lopes emerges as the third black woman to win the title and the second woman from Africa in the 59 years of the existence of the competition.

The gorgeous belle is planning to make use of her title to join in the struggle against HIV and assist several social causes. She is also joining forces with institutions working towards diminishing poverty in her native country.

Hairstyle Prevents Women from Weight Loss

Hairstyle Prevents Women from Weight Loss
The study conducted by the surgeon Regina Benjamin has shown that women ignore the gym if they have a nice hairstyle.

The doctor’s mother, a hairdresser by occupation, inspired the research. She says that many women refuse to train, fearing to spoil the hairdo. This is one of the most common excuses often invented by the women who try to justify themselves for extra weight.

The study was focused on the ladies of Afro-American descent, who find it more difficult to arrange their curly locks into a certain hairstyle. It turns out that these women happen to have one of the highest rates of overweight problems – a half of Afro-American women exceed the traditional weight norm.

The main advice here is to attend fitness classes in the evening if the hairstyle is so dear to you that it can make you miss a visit to the gym. In the morning, after waking up, you will anyway have to re-do your hair.

Protect Your Child from Flu and Cold

Protect Your Child from Flu and Cold
According to the statistics, only 22% of children, who come to the first form, can be called completely healthy. The problems of child health, disease prevention, and the acquisition of habits have been discussed by the doctors at the European Congress on school and university medicine.

The cherished dream of the parents of school children is to see their child adapted to the new conditions as soon as possible. And the rules postulated by the doctors will help to protect the child from seasonal colds and to foster the love of healthy living.

1. Healthy and Tasty Food

It is believed that kids love fast food. In fact, they just like to eat. Think about why your child prefers pizza to dinner at home? Maybe he/she likes cheese and tomatoes, so cook vegetable stew or French saute that the child will surely enjoy. If your child is a sweet tooth and loves pastries, replace cakes and cookies with useful fruits and nuts. Explain why potato chips, sweet soda water and hamburgers are harmful.

Home cooking seems dull to a child? Cook a dish of Italian and French cuisine together – vegetable pasta or minestrone soup – it will be useful and very tasty. Life without Coke may seem too boring. Replace it with fruit or vegetable juices. And instead of a dessert you can offer a beautifully served plate with fruit.

But what is a real must in the children’s diet? Pay attention to the pumpkin, red peppers, carrots, lemon, and cranberry – these foods contain vitamins A, E, PP, F and C. Calcium is very important for the teeth and bones, and there is a lot of it in cheese, cottage cheese, and sesame. A lot of useful microelements can be found in nuts, seeds and legumes. Keep in mind dairy products and vegetable probiotics (onion, garlic).

2. Morning Fitness against the Cold

Love for sports is instilled from childhood. Explain to your child that fitness helps to wake up, to finally get rid of sleepiness and lethargy. It is desirable to do the exercises at the same time and before breakfast. The minimum program includes arms swinging, bending, squatting, jumping in place, push-ups.

If your child does not go in for sports, be sure to arrange an active weekend: horseback riding, a swimming pool, a skating-rink, an outdoor festival and playing with a dog – ask the child what he/she likes.

3. Respiratory Gymnastics Helps to Avoid Health Conditions

For the child not to catch a cold, the doctors recommend breathing exercises. Here are two most useful exercises to prevent colds and the flu.

        • The child should put the hands on the ribs on both sides of the chest and imagine that he/she is smelling a scenty flower. A slow inhale through the nose (the ribs should move), and an exhale. The stomach and shoulders should remain stationary, and the ribs and hands should move. Repeat 3-4 times.
        • It is done standing, with the feet together, and the arms stretched along the body. As the child hears “one”, he/she raises the hands sides up, then the child inhales, holds the breath and slowly puts the hands down with the continuous exhaling sound “ph-h-h ‘. Repeat 2 times.

4. Day Regimen Stops the Flu

A clear and thoughtful daily regimen not only helps with the discipline and teaches us not to have a time trouble, but also protects against colds, if managed correctly. Discuss daily routine with the child and hang the schedule in the best visible place in the room. Remember that sleeping should take at least 9-10 hours. And be sure to include daily walks and exercises (at least 2-3 hours).

5.Massage to Prevent Catching a Cold

One should not necessarily go to a specialist (unless, of course, there is medical evidence). Self-massage will also be useful. Walking on massage mats stimulates the reflex zones of feet. Massage of ears is a great way to wake up as soon as possible: grasp the ear tips with the thumb and forefinger and pull them down a few times.

A vibratory massage of the chest is good for the respiratory system and prevents illness and cold. It is quite easy to tap your chest with a fist as you exhale, pronouncing vowel sounds.

6. Drawing, Constructing, Modelling

These lessons develop fine motor skills and thus help to quickly learn to write beautifully and stimulate the development of intellectual abilities.

7. Speaking to Parents

Share your experiences at dinner, ask about the child’s relationship with peers, his/her thoughts and wishes. Do not speak badly about his abilities and try to criticize less. On the contrary, strengthen the child’s confidence in his/her abilities and encourage progress. It is important not only to take care and be close, but also to teach a child to be independent and to learn to express his/her own opinion.

Easy Quick Weight Loss

1: DRINK 8-10 GLASSES OF WATER EACH DAY Okay, for many people this is a big problem. Water doesn’t taste all that great generally because water doesn’t really “taste” like anything. Drinking water 8 to 10 times each day gets easier the more you actually do it. It is simply a matter of conditioning your taste buds, and yourself, so that it becomes easier to do. Once you get started, you will begin to crave water.

2: EAT BREAKFAST. Do not skip breakfast. If you need to go to bed a little earlier so that you can get up 20 minutes earlier each morning – do it! Breakfast is so important to your good health and to weight control. According to Dr. Barbara Rolls a professor of nutrition at Penn State University, "Your metabolism slows while you sleep, and it doesn't rev back up until you eat again." Eating breakfast is not only good for overall weight loss, it will help you stay on track with your diet the rest of the day. You are more likely to binge on something sweet and in the “bread” group if you skip breakfast.

3: EAT AT LEAST 3 MEALS AND 2 SNACKS EACH DAY. This can be one of the hardest adjustments to make. After all, you are busy! You already have a “full-plate”. When do you have time to worry about filling your plate with more frequent meals? Just like eating breakfast will increase your metabolism, so will eating more often. This will also help you curb your bad-carb intake by making sure that your snacks are planned and occur regularly throughout the day.

4: AVOID WHITE FOODS. This is one easy way to remember what not to eat. If it is made from sugar, flour, potatoes, rice or corn - just say no. Remembering this rule of thumb will make it easier to recognize those rice cakes as an unhealthy high-carb snack. Always look for colorful fruits and veggies to substitute for the white ones. Buy broccoli, lettuce, bell peppers, green beans and peas, brown rice in moderation, leafy greens like kale and spinach, apples, melons, oranges and grapes.

5: EAT YOUR VEGGIES. It is so easy to use a low-carb diet as an excuse for poor nutrition. Resist this temptation. If the only vegetable you have eaten in the last 5 years has been the potato, now is a good time to begin experimenting with other vegetables. This is important for your overall health and to avoid some nasty side effects of not getting enough fiber in your diet. 6: PREPARE YOUR OWN FOOD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. While more and more restaurants are offering low-carb friendly menu items, many of them are still not ideal low-carb fare. There are many recipes for quick and easy meals that you can prepare yourself at home. Try to do this as often as possible.

7: INVEST IN A GOOD SET OF FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS. Having food storage containers of various sizes on hand will make it so much easier for you to plan your meals and snacks. When you buy nuts, fruits and vegetables in bulk you can simply prepare, separate and store them for easy use later. For instance, you can pre-slice your apples and snack on them over several days. Simply cut them, rinse them in pineapple or lemon juice and store. This will make a quick and easy snack for later.

8: EAT SOME PROTIEN AT EACH MEAL & AS A SNACK. In addition to everything that’s been discussed before, eating protein helps you burn more calories. Jeff Hample, Ph.D., R.D., a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association says that, "Protein is made up mainly of amino acids, which are harder for your body to breakdown, so you burn more calories getting rid of them.

9: DRINK A GLASS OF WATER AFTER EACH SNACK. This will help you get in your 8 to 10 glasses of water each day but it can also have other benefits. Ever feel hungry after eating a handful or standard serving of nuts? Try drinking water afterwards. The water will help you feel full and prevent overindulgence.

Happy Long Term Marriage

A team of experts from the institute in the state of Georgia have discovered the main qualities that are responsible for the longevity of a marriage. It turns out that the basis of a long-term partnership consists of six blocks that form a strong relationship.

These six principles are the chemistry of feelings, respect, pleasure, enjoyment, confidence, and empathy. When these components are strong, then the fair sex can be assured that their beloved ones treat marriage as something of vital importance. For the research, the scientists have developed a special test, consisting of six questions. These questions have been answered by more than two thousand couples of different ages.

The first question dealt with the part of a relationship which is called the chemistry of feelings: what emotions arise at the sight of the beloved spouse: excitement, romance, or passion. Then the couples reflected on the issue of respect: what is the daily communication with your partner like? In this case, the couples were asked to rate their ability to listen to their spouse without interrupting and not entering the conversation too early. The next question was about such a feeling as pleasure: how often do you have a romantic evening? The fourth question was if the lady feels natural with her partner.

A similar question, which is associated with confidence, is if the lady can confide her personal fears and dreams to her partner without worrying that they may later be used against her. The last sixth issue was empathy: what is it like when your partner is worrying and needs help. The testing showed that the spouses, who responded affirmatively to the six questions, had a strong and long-term marriage. One negative response became an indicator that in future such relationships would lead to misunderstanding and the cooling of feelings.

Australia to Fight Smoking the Radical Way

Australian authorities are planning to pass a law that would ban to indicate the name of the manufacturer on cigarette packs. The packages will no longer represent logos, and the packs themselves will be olive green. Also, they will display the photographs demonstrating the consequences of smoking.

The authorities expect that these measures will reduce the number of smokers in the country. If the bill is passed, Australia will become the first country to venture such a radical step.

Tobacco manufacturers are outraged by the suggested innovations. In their opinion, the design of the package will not affect the statistics of smokers.

Previously, similar measures were suggested in New Zealand, Canada and Britain, but they were not put into practice.

Trans Fats Are Good

Natural trans fats produced by ruminant animals such as dairy and beef cattle, also called ruminant trans fats, are not detrimental to health, according to a scientific review conducted by Spencer Proctor from University of Alberta.

Spencer carried out the review along with Canadian and international colleagues.

Naturally occurring trans fat has a different fatty acid profile than industrial trans fat, which contributes to its different physiological effects.

In fact, ruminant trans fats show significant positive health effects and some evidence even links them to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Unfortunately natural trans fats gets clubbed with Industrial trans fats found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which have been strongly associated with cholesterol and coronary heart disease.

"A change in how trans fat information is presented on nutrition labels would be a huge step forward," says Proctor, a researcher in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science who is director of the Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Laboratory at the U of A. "Right now, in Canada and the U.S., a substantial portion of natural trans fats content is included in the nutrition label trans fats calculation, which is misleading for the consumer. We need a reset in our approach to reflect what the new science is telling us."

Spencer adds that in some European countries, natural trans fat is not included in the nutrition label calculation. Another approach may be to have separate listings for industrial trans fats and natural trans fats.

Vitamins Prevent Premature Birth

A new research has shown that taking multivitamins before conceiving a child helps women avoid premature birth.

This is one of the first studies aimed at examining the effect of the use of multivitamins immediately before and after conception. It has been proved that nutrient deficiency in the female body can increase the risk of birth complications. At the same time, the researchers warn that it is too early to recommend the women who are planning pregnancy or are already pregnant to take these medications.

There has been conducted an experiment attended by around 36,000 women. The results showed that the majority of pregnant women, approximately 60%, took multivitamins during the four weeks before and eight weeks after the last menstrual period. However, one must take into account such risk factors as smoking, excess weight and maternal age. The study shows that the women who took multivitamins every day and had a normal weight had 20% less chance of having a premature baby if to compare with those who did not take them. At the same time, overweight women did not demonstrate any changes.

Doctors have always recommended expectant mothers to take folic acid, the vitamin that helps prevent complications during pregnancy. The experts demand that food manufacturers should add the vitamin into cereal products, including flour and bread. The authors of the latest study claim that other vitamins, except folic acid, can be added to food products in order to reduce the risk of complications during childbirth. But at the same time they warn that there should be some more research and have not yet recommended daily intake of vitamins to women who are planning a pregnancy.

Parents Give Money to Their Children

Keeping mum is a costly game or moms and dads, as the findings of a recent study commissioned by Sheila’s Wheels reveal. British parents have been found to be paying a hefty yearly sum to their offspring to avoid leaking of something they would rather conceal.

It emerged that every year children receive approximately 83 requests not to divulge various bits of information that came their way, supported by more than £1,400 payoff. Parents seeking to ensure safety of their secrets – in many cases from the other parent – are ready to stump up £27 weekly, either in treats or in cash.

Most often it is the innocuous secret of a gift for an occasion that is supposed to be a surprise, but in 5% of cases children are called upon to aid and abet in breaking the law.

Some of these attempts are clearly meant to preserve peace in the family, like paying hush money for buying something expensive or breaking something at home, but 8% turn out to be “home criminals” who violated the rule set by their partner.

A popular way to bribe a child is buying them things like consoles and gadgets that eats up £176.80 yearly. Clothes are another common bribe costing the average parent over £150, including shoes and trainers (over £140). The same sum goes for fun activities.

Cash investments in the secret-keeping services come to £114.40, making children quite highly-paid members of the family if they play along.

Skin Stronger Than Steel Created

The skin is made from spider web and goat milk, and its creator is Jalil Essaidi together with her colleagues from the union of Forensic Genomics Consortium.

The experts collected milk and injected proteins from the web into it, then the milk was mixed with human skin cells. This resulted in a material which, according to the scientists, is ten times stronger than steel.

The plans of the scientists are to create a man invulnerable to bullets by substituting keratin, which is responsible for the strength of the skin, for this web. Jalil Essaidi claims that the researchers can approach this aim, if the bullet-proof net of the web merges with human skin in vitro.

The scientists have also suggested breeding goats that produce milk already with a protein of the web.

Baby Dental Care Tips

It goes without saying that your baby’s teeth need care and brushing as soon as they come up when the little darling is past the first half-year, but the latest rundown from the scientists states that you should start proper care of milk teeth even before they are there!

Having found an unexpectedly great amount of bacteria teeming in infants’ mouths, scientists concluded that babies’ toothless gums need washing and cleaning which will help escape development of dental cavities at a later age.

Boffins from the University of Illinois carried out research of infants before they have started growing teeth and compared the findings with the results of studies of babies and children who had their teeth treated for cavities. They employed DNA research technologies to explore the mouth and were surprised to find an enormous and active bacteria population that could easily lead to earlier formation of cavities.

Lead researcher Professor Kelly Swanson accentuated that most diseases, including teeth diseases, occur due to a diverse community of bacteria and not just one special kind of bacteria, and the discovery of a large amount of those poses a definite threat to oncoming teeth. If scientists dated the “window of infectivity” at the age from 19 to 33 months before, they are now forced to conclude that this potentially dangerous period may begin much earlier. It is reported that in the US 40% of little ones have cavities in their teeth by the age of three.

It ought to be mentioned that babies who are breastfed on a regular basis are much less threatened because antibodies and antitoxins in breast milk keep down the bacteria population.

More sugary kinds of infant formulas as well as drinks and snack food containing fermentable sugars, on the other hand, increase the risk of teeth decay, therefore The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry urges mothers to clean their toothless babies’ gums.

Dental experts in Britain offer no such advice. Janet Clarke, a spokeswoman for the British Dental Association, while recognizing the scientific value of the study, said that it requires further research to furnish a conclusive proof of the veracity of the findings. For the time being the Brits believe keeping the baby off sugary drinks and snacks after the baby has been weaned is a more important factor for teeth health.

The worst situation for teeth, Ms. Clarke pointed out, is when babies keep sucking and sipping at sugary drinks and foods from a carton for a period of time, because teeth suffer most when they are exposed to a frequent or long-time contact with sugar. Each suchlike contact results in about half-hour’s process when acid issues forth in the mouth causing teeth decay.

It is better to have a one-time drink from a cup or a glass – while the best bet for healthy gums and teeth remains to have drinks and foods with no sugar additives.

Excess Pounds Lead to Depression Sooner Than Obesity

French scientists conducted a research and made a surprising conclusion: obese teenage girls are less affected by depression than the ones who have a few extra pounds.

The study reinforces the common wisdom that fat people have a positive attitude. Sense of well-being may be due to hormonal and neuroendocrine features that accompany overweight. It may also be because a person gave up fighting overweight and learned to love him/herself the way he/she is.

About 40 000 adolescents took part in the research that established a connection between body mass index and depression. The connection was relevant for both boys and girls. Nevertheless, more girls were depressed, although they were less numerous in comparison with their peers of the opposite sex. While boys associated obesity or extra pounds with depression, girls had mental problems due to being even slightly overweight.

Make Your Child Healthy

Of course we take care to give our children good meals, see to it that they are dressed for the weather and try and make their colds and blues go away, hoping that our efforts go to make their lives healthier and happier. But by that time the seeds have already been sown, scientists say, and we can only make insignificant alterations to the trends that have been set.

A number of researches established that the whole lifespan of a person – especially in terms of health – is determined by the conditions he or she was exposed to during the first 1,000 days of life, that is, the fetus period plus two first years.

Practically all the factors related to the body and its function, like weight, life expectancy, the chances of developing cancer or cardiovascular diseases, seem to stem from those 1,000 days – this is the basic idea of a decade-long research conducted by a team of scientists from Southampton University led by Professor David Barker.

According to their theory, a child’s development passes through a number of phases each having its critical period; any problem or irregularity that crop up within these periods can bring on grave health issues later in life.

Womb development, as Professor Barker found, is the period when the child is most vulnerable to influences that have the most impact on the health of the adult. The nutrition stipulates the work of the placenta and the fetus’s weight, and the mother’s every intake of drugs or alcohol, every cigarette and period of stress digs into the well-being of the unborn baby.

The weight at the birth, for example, is in direct correlation with the risk of developing a heart disease at a mature age. The findings show that a baby who weighed under 5 lb 7 oz at birth has two times higher risk of dying from a heart attack than a baby who made 9 lb and over.

Further discoveries show that if there is not enough food in the womb it goes to the brain with the heart left underdeveloped. The way of the pancreatic cells that generate insulin are coming along when in the womb have to do with the future development of diabetes. The state of the uterus is linked with the person’s weight through the life.

All those influences, Professor Barker is sure, cannot be corrected by later care and medication. And the main factor, in his opinion, is proper eating habits not only during pregnancy, but all the time. It is the question of “building a body that the baby can live off,” he said. One cannot expect a baby to thrive on snacks and tidbits.

The professor called the results of the research “a window of opportunity where we can make better people.”

In what ways can a mom ensure that she will have a child whose health will never be a cause of worry for her?

  • avoid drinking, especially during the first trimester
  • avoid smoking, and tell your hubby that you are not to inhale the fumes from his smoking
  • avoid stressful situations
  • avoid overeating and eating sugary food, but take care to feed well
  • before you set about getting pregnant try and slim down to lightest comfortable weight
  • take folic acid every day when you begin planning for a family.

Women Spend 5 Hours Daily on Gossiping

The British experts have conducted a new study, the results of which allowed calculating how much time women spend every day discussing other people.

As it turned out, a typical lady spends nearly a third of her wake time gossiping – 298 minutes per day which is equivalent to nearly five hours. In addition to the total amount of time that women devote to this occupation, the researchers have identified the most favorite topics for ladies to discuss.

Thus, it turns out that ladies spend about 24 minutes every day talking about their weight, diet and clothing sizes. One third of the participants of the study admit that they regularly discuss what they eat with friends and colleagues, and a quarter of all the respondents also exchange interesting recipes. As one of the leading authors of the study, Steve Barton, says, he and his colleagues did not expect food to be such a popular topic for women to discuss.

The weaker sex also likes to discuss makeup and various procedures, as well as the celebrities’ private life. Most often the women’s interlocutors are neighbors, shop assistants or even unknown women as, for example, in public transport. In addition, women eagerly talk about children, shopping, ways of spending a holiday, series, common acquaintances, and relationships. What is nice, the ladies very rarely complain about their own partners.
