When weekends come, thousands of family women in Britain turn to their BFFs for most psychologically comfortable time – of 3,000 polled women 30% said they definitely preferred the company of their girlfriends. And when it comes to shopping the percentage of friends over partners grows dramatically to 60%, ensuring the average woman of needed quality advice and fruitful discussion and excluding possible grudging over the prices of certain items.
Pleasures of a day spa, a meal out or just having a glass of wine together – seasoned with a lot of gossip, surely – follow shopping on the list of the most popular female weekend activities.
Almost half of the 3,000 complained that their partner is not the person they can talk freely in the presence of – and 10% admitted that they don’t feel like their true selves with the partner around, a comfort they draw from their friends’ company.
It was a “fascinating” piece of news, said a spokesperson for Lakeside Shopping Centre, that for so many women escapism and relaxation should feel best when shared with girlfriends and not with husbands.

Over the past 30 years, the number of morbidly obese people in the world has become twice bigger. Tuesday is the worst day to start a diet. Those who started a diet on Tuesday, are far more likely to lose their resolve within a week, while those who started a diet on Monday or Sunday, appear to be more motivated to continue the diet.
The experiment involved 2000 Britons who were on a diet last year. It revealed that those who started the diet on Sunday lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks (approximately 4 kg) on average. 88% of them did not put on weight after the diet was over.
The survey also showed that an average British woman tries three diets in a year. Most give up the diet on Friday, after a stressful workweek.
So, according to the research, the greatest perseverance in following the diet was shown by those who started a new diet on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

The doctors call the weight, which is far from the norm, one of the factors that prevent conception. However, scientists have found that extreme thinness does more harm to our fertility than obesity.
In recent years, there has been a constant struggle with the excess weight, the nutritionists have insisted that extra weight, in addition to other health problems and appearance, leads to difficulties in conceiving. However, these risks have never been compared with those of underweight women.
The study conducted by the American scientists showed that thin women are less likely to become pregnant than those, who are overweight, and even obese.
During the study, 2,500 women (who were trying to conceive with the help of IVF at the Fertility Center of Chicago) were divided into three groups according to their weight: very thin, normal, and obese. During eight years, though at different periods, these women were observed in the center and were trying to get pregnant.
As a result, those who belonged to the group with normal weight, got pregnant in 50% of cases. Among obese women, 45% became pregnant, and only 34% of very thin women from the group were able to conceive.
Very thin women were those with the body mass index (BMI) ranging from 14 to 18. For example, a woman with the height of 162.5 cm and the weight of 44.45 kg could have such a BMI (BMI 17).
It is known that thin women have a reduced amount of the female hormone estrogen which is often associated with infertility among excessively thin women. However, this study considered only the women, who were undergoing the IVF procedure, and all their hormones were brought back to norm. The women from all three groups produced the same number of ovules, and the problem with the conception happened at a later stage, when the fertilized ovule was implanted in the uterus. The embryo finds it more difficult to penetrate into the uterus of very thin women. That is the verdict of the scientists.

Amber seemed to have completed the 26.2-mile stretch with no trouble at all, having outran her less burdened husband Joe Miller by a long chalk (she came 34,339th against his finishing 34,997th).
Her participation moved the audience to root for her with cries “Go pregnant lady” until she crossed the finish line, upon which feat she sat down to bite at her sandwich – but never finished it due to the onset of labors. She was whisked to the Central DuPage Hospital and delivered herself of daughter June, supposedly the first baby to ever have run a marathon!
June is the second child to the athletic Miller family.

And now we have a new research which involved 40 000 women. They were asked what vitamin supplements they had been taking as early as 4 weeks before the conception and during 8 weeks after it. Three years later, the same women had to deal with the tests about the development of their children.
It turned out that if the mother had taken folic acid during the described period, the delay of speech had been observed only in four cases per thousand children. And the babies of those mothers, who had not been taking folic acid, had nine cases of delay in speech development per thousand.
The scientists from Columbia University claim that folic acid should be taken by all women of reproductive age. That is why in the U.S. and Canada, most grain products are enriched with folic acid so that most pregnant women could have an opportunity to receive this important ingredient.
Recent studies prove once again that folic acid plays a very important role in the development of infants, whose health begins to be formed at the earliest stages of their mother’s pregnancy.

It turns out that men also have the so-called biological clock. It is certainly not the same as that of women. But the research shows that men cannot be equally fertile throughout their life. And it is worth remembering, especially when it comes to the 40th anniversary.
Other studies also do not encourage late fatherhood. For example, there is evidence that the children, whose fathers are of the older age, have the increased risk of heart defects, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Of course, one should not panic because male sperm has the ability to renew, and not all older fathers have unhealthy babies. And for the conception, the health of the ovule is most important.
However, doctors still advise to monitor the quality of sperm. To do this, one needs to eat right, not to smoke, to drink alcohol in moderation, to have an active lifestyle, and to avoid taking hot baths since sperm likes cool temperatures. And do not postpone parenthood until later!

Postings like “hey big nose” appeared on Nicolette’s Facebook page, the girl’s mother, Maria Taylor, shared with Nightlife correspondent JuJu Chang. And when it happened for the fifth or sixth time in a week, Ms Taylor’s patience wore thin. “I came in when she was on the phone with the boy, and I took the phone from her, and I said, ‘Listen, you need to take them off Facebook.’”
Meaning to put a stop to it once and for all, she then went to consult a local plastic surgeon who told her that a number of surgeries have been brought about by teasing and taunting, and that decided the caring woman. She signed her daughter for a nose job.

Surely it’s not only bags – shoes are also popular with secret hoarders (8% of women), while some of them just want an extra pound for the weekend.

35% of economical women want to splash when on vacation. 5% pile up money for a boob job or some other kind of beauty surgery, and another 5% are looking forward to having a really great night out with their BFFs.

A spokesperson for Skipton Building Society said in the comments that what with the current economic climate and credit difficulties one would have thought that the saving habit has gone down the drainpipe – but the results of the research show that with a lot of people saving remains an essential part of regular budgeting with no regard to it being more difficult nowadays.

It was referred to as “the true British spirit” that helps women give themselves a treat with “a well-earned indulgence” that is psychologically important.

Generous amounts of fruit and vegetable can protect you from heart diseases even when genetically the odds are stacked against you, according to a study published in the current issue of the journal PLoS Medicine.

An international team of scientists, led by researchers at McMaster and McGill universities, have discovered that the gene that is the strongest marker for heart disease can be subdued with proper diet.

"We know that 9p21 genetic variants increase the risk of heart disease for those that carry it," said Dr. Jamie Engert, joint principal investigator of the study, who is a researcher in cardiovascular diseases at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC). "But it was a surprise to find that a healthy diet could significantly weaken its effect."

Researchers analysed more than 27,000 individuals from five ethnicities – European, South Asian, Chinese, Latin American and Arab – during the study and observed the effect of their diets on the effect of the 9p21 gene.

The results suggest that individuals with the high risk genotype who consumed a prudent diet, composed mainly of raw vegetables, fruits and berries, had a similar risk of heart attack to those with the low risk genotype.

"We observed that the effect of a high-risk genotype can be mitigated by consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables," said Sonia Anand, joint principal investigator of the study, and a researcher at the Population Health Research Institute and a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. "Our results support the public health recommendation to consume more than five servings of fruits or vegetables as a way to promote good health."

But thin children and their parents had never been in the focus of their attention.

An infant weighing 7.3 kg was born in July 2011 in the USA. The birth by caesarean section took place in Longview Clinic, Texas.

The parents of the newborn – Janet Johnson and Michael Brown – decided to name the boy JaMichael. JaMichael is Janet’s fourth child.

During her pregnancy, the doctors warned the woman that the baby would be big. However, the weight of the boy at birth exceeded their expectations by almost 2 pounds. Such impressive size of the newborn was caused by gestational diabetis which Janet had developed during pregnancy.

According to the doctors, the giant baby is now safe, but he will need an additional medical examination because of high blood sugar levels.

“I cannot believe that he is so huge. We bought a lot of children’s clothes, and now we need to give them back because they are too small for him,” Janet told the reporters.

There were no diapers of the suitable size for JaMichael in Longview Clinic.

The study involved 1037 adolescents aged 12-17, 528 parents, and telephone interviews with 1006 adolescents of the same age.

It was discovered that 9 out of 10 parents do not associate the time spent in social networks with the emergence of bad habits. In their turn, Facebook representatives emphasize that the resource prohibits drug promotion.

Dr. Alex Johnson from the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics has created genetically modified rice together with his colleagues. The product can solve the problem of the shortage of iron and zinc in those parts of the world where people are malnourished.
The created rice contains 4 times more iron and 2 times more zinc than the usual rice. The scientists have deceived the plant to create rice: they forced it to “think” that it lacks iron. As a result, the rice would pick up more iron and store it in the grain.
Traditional cultivation techniques are not able to give even half of the required nutrients. So the researchers had to turn to biotechnology. They used a virus to increase the activity of a gene that naturally occurs in rice. As a result, they managed to get a product with the desired concentration of substances.
Dr. Johnson suggests that it will take about 10 years before this new rice comes to stores.

Such cases are rare: only one woman out of every three million may suffer from a toxic shock syndrome caused by using tampons in the critical days. In the UK, the 15-year-old Paige Roffey appeared to be in such a rare situation.

The girl had been using a tampon for only 4 hours, before she lost consciousness when being at home. She was immediately taken to emergency doctors. At first, the experts could not determine what was wrong. Thinking it might have been a virus, the girl was even taken home, but she lost consciousness again, and then the schoolgirl was brought back to the doctors.

Paige was in a very serious condition, when the doctors managed to tell the correct diagnosis – toxic shock syndrome. It was caused by the use of tampons. Toxic shock syndrome is characterized by the penetration of bacteria into the blood. The schoolgirl was brought to an artificial coma state for two days, since her condition was severe. During this period of time, she was prescribed strong medicines, and the doctors fought for her life, as she was on the point of dying.

The girl’s Mom, 39-year-old Sarah, confesses that she even started thinking about the daughter’s funeral. She and her husband did not leave the sick daughter’s bed even for a minute, constantly changing each other. Fortunately, Paige’s state improved and she was able to leave hospital after 10 days.

The state of toxic shock is a rare phenomenon, but it is very dangerous to life. It occurs when the bacteria, basically safe for the skin and living on its surface, penetrate into the bloodstream and begin to produce noxious toxins. One of the first symptoms is the fall in blood pressure. Other symptoms, which include muscle pain and diarrhea, may be confused with enteric infections or stomach flu.

The mother and the daughter are now trying to do everything to tell people about the toxic shock, Paige distributes leaflets in her school telling about the dangers of toxic shock. Paige used Tampax tampons; the representatives of the manufacturer assured that they were happy to learn about the schoolgirl’s recovery. In their turn, they are conducting an independent research of the effects of using tampons, and these studies have not been completed yet.

Breast Augmentation Unproven

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has warned against "stem-cell" breast augmentation at the group's annual conference in Birmingham.
Senior plastic surgeons of association said, stem-cell breast augmentations are unproven and should not be offered commercially.
"To think that this unproven research is hijacked and used in the commercial sector is really an appalling thought," former BAAPS president and consultant plastic surgeon Adam Searle told the BBC. "Not least when it's being utilized by inadequately trained practitioners."
"Stem Cell" breast augmentation is a variation of traditional breast augmentation using fat grafting, which involves harvesting fat from areas where it is in excess - like the abdomen, hips, thighs, or buttocks - and re-implanting it in the breast for cosmetic and aesthetic purposes.
In "Stem Cell" augmentation, the harvested fat is enriched with stem cells before being grafted into the breasts. Half the harvested fat is put through a special machine that extracts and condenses the stem cells, which are then mixed with the remaining fat before being injected into the breasts.
The stem cells stimulate generation of a blood supply capillary network to the transplanted fat cells, which then integrate with the existing fat cells. As a result, less of the fat re-implanted into the breasts is reabsorbed by the body. The fat volume retention rate is estimated to be 80% or more.
In traditional breast augmentation using fat grafting 20 to 95 percent of transferred fat can be reabsorbed!
Earlier this week, new clinical data on cell-enriched fat grafting, based on a 12-month trial, was presented to a conference of the Oncoplastic Reconstructive Breast Surgery group, in Nottingham. The study involved 70 patients in seven centers in four countries.
Data from the study hasn't been peer reviewed, but establishes the efficacy of the technique for breast reconstruction following mastectomy.
The study found no serious side-effects, nor did the procedure increase the chances of breast cancer recurrence.
Eva Weiler-Mithoff, a consultant surgeon at Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit in Glasgow, who presented the findings of the study at the conference, explained to the BBC how cell-enriched augmentation scored over traditional fat-grafting:
"Traditional fat-grafting (in breast reconstructive surgery) does not work terribly well because there is not enough circulation to support the survival of the fat graft," she said.
"We know if we augment the fat graft with the naturally occurring regenerative cells in fat tissues we can improve the circulation around the fat graft and the survival of the fat graft."
Eva, however, admits additional studies, based on longer-term (5 to 10 years) data, are required for the technique to be considered safe for use in cosmetic surgery.
"We still don't have enough long-term outcome data to say it's safe in the sense that it doesn't encourage the cancer to come back or new breast cancer to develop," she said.
Private clinics that offer cell-enriched augmentation in the UK insist the surgery is safe.
In a statement, Dr Valentina Petrone of The Private Clinic at Harley Street in London, which will have used the technique on 200 patients by the end of this year, said:
"The Private Clinic is confident in respect to the safety of this treatment."
"We, of course, look forward to completion of studies and any other findings as they become available over time and will, if necessary, adapt our protocols accordingly," he added.
