The children, who suffer from pauses in breathing during sleep, breathe through the mouth or snore, are more likely to have behavioral problems.
These are the results of the new study, which was conducted in England. The researchers analyzed the questionnaires of 11,000 children. First of all, the data about the quality of sleep were collected when the children were 6, 18, 30, 42, 57, and 69 months old, and then the parents were asked to answer some questions about the behavioral factors of their children (at the age of 4 and 7 years).
According to the statistics collected, 45% of the children had no problems with the quality of sleep. 55% of the children demonstrated all the three signs of breathing problems.
After the exclusion of other factors influencing social adjustment, the researchers found that the likelihood of behavioral problems in children with sleep disorders ranged from 40% to 100%. The more the symptoms of respiratory failure manifested themselves, the higher was the risk of such problems as hyperactivity, aggression, unwillingness to follow the rules, anxiety, depression, and difficulties with socialization among peers.
The researchers recommend that more attention should be paid to children’s nighttime recreation, providing all the factors of healthy sleep (mode, ventilation, quiet games). It is extremely important since breathing problems can affect the child’s behavior and disrupt the balance in various body systems in the long term.

  • According to him, if the product does not contain fat (it is labeled as “low fat”, “fat-free”), the lean taste is compensated for by the excessive amount of sugar, salt, and artificial additives.
  • Cookies with “no sugar” may contain such ingredients as glucose, fructose, and corn syrup. Ultimately, this is the same sugar that will be converted to fat if not burned. Read the labels carefully!
  • Low-fat yogurt usually contains a large amount of preservatives, and 0% fat is compensated for by artificial flavors. As a result, even the useful probiotics are wasted in yogurt.
  • The concept of “low-calorie product” is also a trap. The product may contain very little sugar, but it may contain three times more harmful fats and may have no vitamins and minerals. And artificial additives will only clog your body and turn into fat.
What is the solution? The nutritionist advises not to develop “the fad of buying” dietary products in supermarkets. A new study has confirmed stray past reports that some women can derive sexual pleasure from physical exercise, and even experience orgasm.
In the past, women exercising their core abdominal muscles have reported experiencing orgasm, a phenomenon informally dubbed "coregasm."
According to the study, non abdominal exercises can also induce sexual pleasure.
"The most common exercises associated with exercise-induced orgasm were abdominal exercises, climbing poles or ropes, biking/spinning and weight lifting," says Debby Herbenick, co-director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
"These data are interesting because they suggest that orgasm is not necessarily a sexual event, and they may also teach us more about the bodily processes underlying women's experiences of orgasm," Herbenick adds.
The findings are published in a special issue of Sexual and Relationship Therapy, a leading peer-reviewed journal in the area of sex therapy and sexual health.
The results are based on online surveys of 124 women who reported experiencing exercise-induced orgasms (EIO) and 246 women who experienced exercise-induced sexual pleasure (EISP). The women ranged in age from 18 to 63. Most were in a relationship or married, and about 69 percent identified themselves as heterosexual.
About 40 percent of women who had experienced EIO and EISP had done so on more than 10 occasions.
Most women reporting EIO said they were not fantasizing sexually or thinking about anyone they were attracted to during their experiences. They also reported feeling some degree of self-consciousness when exercising in public places, with about 20 percent reporting they could not control their experience.
Abdominal exercises using the "captain's chair" were particularly associated with the sexual experience.


The mechanisms behind exercise-induced orgasm and exercise-induced sexual pleasure remain unclear.

Debby says, the study findings may help women who experience EIO/EISP feel more normal about their experiences, but cautions that it is not yet known whether such exercises can improve women's sexual experiences.

"It may be that exercise -- which is already known to have significant benefits to health and well-being -- has the potential to enhance women's sexual lives as well."

The study did not determine how common it is for women to experience exercise-induced orgasm or exercise-induced sexual pleasure.

Cheese

Do not eat:
  • soft cheese with mold, such as brie, camembert and other kinds of cheese with a similar composition and type of skin, such as goat cheese;
  • cheese with mold-like pale blue streaks, such as Danish blue, Gorgonzola and Roquefort.
  • Cheese with mold may contain Listeria, the bacteria that cause listeriosis. Even a mild form of this infection in pregnant women can cause miscarriage, birth to a stillborn child and severe diseases of the newborn.

Eggs

Do not eat raw or undercooked eggs, avoid foods that contain them, such as homemade mayonnaise.
Before use, make sure that the eggs are thoroughly cooked, that yolks and whites are hard. This prevents the risk of salmonella.

Milk

Do not drink raw (not pasteurized) milk, including not pasteurized goat or sheep milk. Do not eat any food that contains it, such as goat cheese. The milk should undergo thorough heat treatment or pasteurization.

Pasty

Avoid all types of pasty, including vegetable pasty, as they may contain listeria, which were mentioned above.

Meat

Do not eat raw or undercooked meat. Boil the meat and poultry thoroughly to have no traces of blood and no “pink colored meat”. Be especially careful with sausage and ground meat.
In some countries, pregnant women are not advised to eat smoked meat or fish, because there is also a risk that the food may contain listeria bacteria. However, pregnant women in the UK are not given such advice, because they believe that the risk is very, very low.

Liver

Do not eat liver or products containing liver, such as liver pasty or liverwurst, as they may contain large amounts of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A can harm your baby.

Foods Containing Vitamin A

Do not take:
  • high-dose multivitamin supplements;
  • fish oil;
  • any supplements containing vitamin A.

Fish

Eating some species of fish should be limited. These include tuna and other fatty fish species. In addition, you can not eat raw shellfish, as it can cause food poisoning. It is best to also give up going to sushi bars.

Alcohol

You should not drink alcohol, if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Alcohol can seriously and irreversibly affect the development of your child.

Caffeine

You should limit caffeine consumption during pregnancy – no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day. High levels of caffeine can lead to the birth of an infant with low birth weight. Too much caffeine can also cause a miscarriage. Be careful: except coffee and tea, caffeine is naturally found in some foods and is added to some non-alcoholic beverages.
But do not get disappointed, if your favorite foods are included in the “black list”. You have a unique opportunity to discover other dishes, while eating the favorites is impossible. So, you are sure to broaden the list of your most desirable foods and dishes after pregnancy.

The researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have conducted a study, which showed that the effectiveness of vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus) is greatly reduced for children, whose blood contains higher concentrations of perfluorinated compounds (PFC). So, seven-year-old children, whose concentration of PFC in the blood was twice exceeding the norm, had the reduction of the number of antibodies by 49%. Accordingly, the likelihood of being infected with diphtheria and tetanus was 4(!) times higher in some cases.
When the concentration of PFC in the body increases, the immune system becomes more sluggish and less capable of supporting protection mechanisms to combat pathogens. Thus, the children, who participated in the study and showed a high concentration of the PFC in the blood, had a smaller number of tetanus and diphtheria antibodies. The consequences of this failure may be the child’s having development problems, impaired reproductive function, as well as other health problems.
Perfluorinated compounds is a group of widely used fluorinated organic compounds that may be contained in repellents for the treatment of clothing, footwear and carpets, in a package for popcorn, which can be cooked at home in a microwave oven, as well as the packaging of child care cosmetics.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that boys of the age of 11 to 12 years should be vaccinated with the vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV).
Since 2006, HPV vaccine is used in the U.S. to vaccinate girls and young women. It is considered very effective in preventing cervical cancer. From the moment this initiative of the Academy of Pediatrics was approved by the medical community, the number of types of cancer, caused by HPV, has increased. It has been found that the sad list includes cancer of the rectum, and some types of head and neck tumors.
Initially, when the positive effect of the HPV vaccine was confirmed, it was assumed that it could be effective in preventing cervical cancer and genital warts. Dr. Michael Brady, chairman of the Academy’s committee on infectious diseases says it is clear today that vaccination should take place among the teenagers, including both young men and women. The current approach is ineffective in terms of public health, since men are also involved in the transmission of human papillomavirus. If the vaccination involves both girls and boys, perhaps, the number of cases of HPV will decrease.
The new guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics were published on February 27 in the Pediatrics journal.

German researchers have drawn the conclusion that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) because of sleep apnea can sometimes be determined by genetic causes.
DNA analysis of a small group of children showed that the tested male infants had a certain mutation of the enzyme, which could interfere with the ability of proper breathing during sleep. However, this mutation was not found in girls.
The author of the study, Dr. Michael Klintschar, director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Medical University of Hannover, explains that his team tried to take into account the previous studies, which proved that the deviation in the brain stem, regulating breath and other basic body functions, led to SIDS. The doctor adds that the causes of these disorders remain unclear, but some scientists believe that genes inherited from parents may be one of several factors leading to SIDS.
German scientists point out that parents can reduce the risk of SIDS by 50%, avoiding to lay the baby on its stomach. In addition, this risk reduces the use of pacifiers. Among other risk factors, scientists indicate parental smoking right next to the child, excessive wrapping of the child, or sleeping in a hot unventilated room.

Children in single-parent families or living with a stepfather were proved to move across the country or the world more often than others. The families with two or three children were also more likely to move than families with four or more children.
In general, those who had moved more often than others, demonstrated health problems, they were weaker than their peers, and got sick more often. They also had frequent psychological stress, drinking and smoking problems in the adolescent age and later, when these children became adults.

British scientists have made a unique discovery: female ovaries contain stem cells that can be used to grow an egg in the laboratory.
Previously, it was thought that the woman‘s ovaries contain a limited supply of eggs, the number of which gradually decreases to menopause. There is also a reduction in their quality characteristics. However, the scientists from Harvard have managed to refute this dogma. The researchers, led by Dr. Jonathan Tilly, director of the Center for Reproductive Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital, conducted an experiment. They took the stem cells, the carriers of a unique protein DDX4, from the young woman’s ovaries, developed them in laboratory conditions to the state of immature oocytes, which were later transplanted in mice. In the body of the rodents, the cells reached the state of formed eggs that the female body produces naturally.
Dr Allan Pacey, an expert on male fertility at the University of Sheffield, told the BBC that the discovery not only denied the already established medical opinion, it provided some interesting possibilities for the preservation of fertility for women undergoing treatment for cancer or suffering from infertility.

Superportions and calorie dishes in restaurants are often blamed for a significant contribution to the worldwide obesity epidemic – and it’s not in vain. People gain weight faster if they eat much and quickly. Of course, they do not eat so quickly and in such quantities at home.

Why Do You Eat More Than You Need?

Well, what’s so bad in 200-300 extra calories a couple of times a week? If you think so, you are wrong. Because if you put these calories together and “multiply” them by lack of exercise, add the time spent watching television, you will get a couple of extra centimetres on your waist in a year.
How can we change this situation? You can certainly refuse from going to restaurants and cafes, but for most of us nothing can replace this pleasant pastime. Family gatherings, search for a boyfriend or girlfriend, romantic dates – all these are good reasons for eating out.

Mindful Eating Strategy

Taking into account everything above-mentioned, Gail Timmerman, the University of Texas professor and nutrition specialist, suggested his strategy of food consumption for those who can not do without restaurants. The strategy is called “mindful eating“. It suggests that you should eat slowly and in the meantime consider your sensations. You should focus on what you eat, the circumstances you eat in, and the feelings of hunger and satiety. The effectiveness of the strategy has been verified experimentally.

The Mindful Eating Study

The experiment involved 35 middle-aged women who attended restaurants at least 3 times a week. The women’s weight was different – from normal to pathologic obesity. Besides, 30% were keeping a diet at that time trying to lose weight, and 23% just wanted to maintain their weight. Half of the participants were randomly selected as the control group. The second half was prescribed a six-week “mindful eating” program.

How to Choose Healthier Foods in Restaurants?

The essence of the program was as follows: every week for 2 hours the women were being explained how to avoid overeating and learn to choose healthy foods in different situations. For example, it was recommended to pay attention to steamed rice in Chinese restaurants, and to black beans instead of the usual fried foods in Mexican ones. In addition, at the weekly session with the instructor the women were suggested to focus on their feelings of hunger, while they were gulping down cheese and crackers, or on the feeling of satiety when they were eating chocolate.

Study Result: Weight Loss

The women were allowed to continue eating out (or ordering food home). However, during the experiment, they lost on average 1.7 pounds, each day consuming 300 calories less (the weight and the number of calories in the control group did not change). Moreover, the “restaurant menu” had only 124 of the total number of daily calories.

It’s time to clarify that mindful eating appeared due to another “movement” – mindfulness – that is gaining popularity in meditation practice. It teaches concentration, awareness of your body and mind. This is a Buddhist tradition, recently popularized in the field of psychology. Today, it helps experts to successfully relieve stress and pain, treat depression and anxiety.

Those with heart disease may not be able to compensate for their bodies' higher demand for oxygen when inhaling cold air, say Penn State researchers.
Healthy people can adequately redistribute blood to the blood vessels entering the heart during the combined stimulus of cold-air inhalation and exertion.
"This study can help us understand why cold air is such a trigger for coronary events," said Lawrence I. Sinoway, Distinguished Professor of Medicine and director of the Heart and Vascular Institute, Penn State College of Medicine.
Breathing cold air during exercise can cause uneven oxygen distribution throughout the heart. But a healthy body generally corrects for this problem and redistributes blood flow, making sure the heart continues to function properly. In people with heart problems -- such as coronary artery disease -- this may not be the case, said Sinoway.
"If you are doing some type of isometric work and you're breathing cold air, your heart is doing more work -- it's consuming more oxygen," said Sinoway, also director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Penn State.
Isometric work includes such activities as shoveling snow and carrying a briefcase or laptop bag. The heart works harder when exerted in cold temperatures and the number of deaths due to cardiac arrest peaks during the winter.
"There are two different things going on here -- demand and supply," said Matthew D. Muller, postdoctoral fellow at the Heart and Vascular Institute, Penn State College of Medicine. "We thought that oxygen demand in the heart would be higher with cold-air breathing and we also thought that oxygen supply would be a little bit impaired. And that's generally what we found."
Sinoway, Muller and colleagues reported their results in a recent issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology and in the current issue of the American Journal of Physiology, Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
The researchers first studied healthy young adults in their 20s and then studied a group of healthy older adults in their 60s so that they could learn how the heart functions in people without disease. Each subject was monitored for lung function and heart functions during the trials.
